Unkel brings together sites of cultural history, literary connections and several hiking options. If you are looking for a hotel for a stay in Unkel, you can choose a focus based on your interests: local history, literature or outdoor activities. Options range from the permanent exhibition at the Willy Brandt Forum and literary memorial sites to trails with clearly specified distances. This makes it easy to compare the different travel themes.

Cultural History in Unkel

The Willy Brandt Forum is located on Willy-Brandt-Platz in the heart of Unkel’s old town. It commemorates the life and work of Willy Brandt (1913–1992), German Chancellor, Nobel Peace Prize laureate and citizen of Unkel. The permanent exhibition documents key stages in his political career and offers insights into his lesser-known life as a citizen of the town. The forum is open to everyone; admission is free. Check the latest visitor information before your trip.

The Prison Tower and St. Pantaleon add further historical highlights. Unkel’s Prison Tower was built around 1550 as part of the town fortifications. St. Pantaleon features Gothic and Baroque interior furnishings, as well as a Chapel of the Fourteen Holy Helpers. The town hall also tells a story of different eras: it was built in 1855, and in 1936, by official order, its air-raid shelter was expanded and equipped as a bomb shelter. Since 2005, the cellar has once again been furnished with original items that were required at the time, such as fire beaters, gas masks and air-raid helmets. The furnishings offer a glimpse into life in the cellar during wartime.

Literature and Wine

At the end of Pützgasse, directly on the Rhine promenade, stands the Freiligrath House. The poet Ferdinand Freiligrath (1810–1876) lived there in 1839 and 1840. Another literary connection to the town is the UNKEL LIEST reading festival. Since 2023, it has been organised by the town of Unkel and the Unkel Development Agency with partners; by its third edition, it had already become a tradition. Works written in Unkel or with a special connection to the town are presented at various venues in Unkel’s town centre. Specific dates and programmes vary.

Wine is another notable local theme: well-known wines from Unkel include “Unkeler Funkeler” and “Pantaleon”. Together with the literary connections, they add another cultural focus to your trip planning.

Hiking Trails and Views

Created in 2022 and 2023, the Unkel Stelenweg offers a short 6.5-kilometre route and a long 8-kilometre route. The circular “Around Unkel – Vineyards and Views” hiking trail is about 4 kilometres long and follows forest and hiking paths. This makes it the shortest of the three options described; the Stelenweg offers two longer alternatives.

The ascent to the Rheinsteig begins at the waterfall in the Hähnerbach Valley. A Rheinsteig portal was inaugurated on Stuxberg on 22 October 2025, serving as a photo spot featuring the Rheinsteig logo. From the viewing platform on Stuxhöhe, the view extends across Unkel, the Rhine and the Rhine Valley. The trails, photo spot and view offer different highlights for a stay that brings together nature and local history.

Two clear questions can help you choose a focus for your trip: Would you like to spend more time exploring cultural history and literature, or choose one of the hiking routes described? The stated trail distances make it easy to compare the scale of the hiking options; the historical and literary sites offer a different way to discover Unkel.
