Höhn is one of the districts of Windhagen located south of the A 3 and lies in the Rhein-Westerwald Nature Park. The municipality of Windhagen comprises twelve individual villages. The wider destination brings together different themes, including landscapes, wool crafts and village traditions; specific location references range from Höhn and Hohn to the center of Windhagen.
Hike along the Windhagener Weg
The approximately 7 km circular Windhagener Weg (W2) starts in the center near the church and follows the outskirts through open fields, meadows and patches of woodland. At the end of one leg, the route reaches Windhagen-Hohn on the main road. Its approximate length and the transitions between open areas and woodland provide a practical framework for planning the hike into your day. Check current route conditions before setting out.
Wool crafts and farm activities in Hohn
In wool workshops at the Butzelhof in Hohn, participants learn how to prepare washed raw wool for further processing. The tools used include wool combs, hand carders and a carding machine. This means the focus is not only on the material, but also on hands-on work with the tools. Workshop dates and packages may change; check in advance to find out what is currently available.
Children’s birthday parties can also be held outdoors at the Butzelhof, with sheep to pet, feed and cuddle. The event must be arranged in advance. This is a different reason to visit the farm than a wool workshop: the focus here is on a specific celebration and making arrangements beforehand.
The Butzelhof is associated with a farm shop, products from its sheep and goat dairy, and a large range of wool products and sheepskins. Mottled mountain sheep are also mentioned. The product range may change.
Village character and traditions in Hohn
Hohn is characterized by attractive farmsteads, renovated historic buildings and half-timbered houses with large gardens. Every May 1, residents choose a village king or queen at the small village square. While the buildings shape the village’s architectural character, the annual election provides a regular cultural fixture in the calendar.
Windhagen as the wider setting
Windhagen comprises twelve individual villages and covers an area of 1,494 hectares in the northern part of the Rhein-Westerwald Nature Park, just under 30 kilometers southeast of Bonn. St. Bartholomew’s Catholic parish church is a focal point in the center of Windhagen. It was built in 1869–1870 to simplified plans by Cologne architect Vincent Statz.
Since 2018, information boards at eight locations so far in the municipal area have served as stops along the “Trail of History and Stories.” They explain the significance and history of the respective monuments. The signage may be updated over time.
