The approximately six-kilometre-long forest nature trail between Breitscheid and Döttesfeld combines hiking with knowledge about nature. At Hölderstein, there is another activity: the WesterwaldSteig passes through the Grenzbach valley near Döttesfeld and goes by a via ferrata. The area therefore offers different ways to spend time outdoors—from views of local wildlife and plants to a via ferrata section with ladders and a bridge.

Forest Knowledge and Hiking Trails

Döttesfeld is characterised by forests and hilly open countryside. Information boards along the forest nature trail explain the local wildlife and plants; a natural biotope illustrates ecological connections. This gives the trail its own focus: it is not just about the route, but also about natural habitats and relationships in nature.

Döttesfeld’s well-maintained hiking trails include barbecue huts where you can take a break. If you want to combine a hike with observing nature, the forest nature trail offers specific places to stop: the information boards and the biotope. The trail is about six kilometres long; this figure describes the route, not the time it takes to walk.

Via Ferrata at Hölderstein

The Hölderstein via ferrata is about 300 metres long and has an elevation gain of 80 metres. The route includes metal ladders, footholds and a bridge. These details make it quite different from the forest nature trail: here, the via ferrata sections define the route. Appropriate via ferrata equipment is required, and use is at your own risk. Equipment can be rented at Hotel “Zum Wiedbachtal” in Döttesfeld.

To reach the via ferrata, a trail leads from a hiking car park near Breitscheid along the yellow-marked access route of the WesterwaldSteig. The municipality also provides a forest car park as a point of reference: the forest nature trail starts below it, while the footpath to the via ferrata is opposite the shelter. These directions refer to different starting points and help distinguish between the routes.

Cycling and Railway Traces

Cycling routes around Döttesfeld follow quiet roads, with climbs and descents along the way. This is a different way to explore the area from walking the forest nature trail or taking the via ferrata. As a wider regional reference point, the B256 passes near Döttesfeld and connects Neuwied with Altenkirchen.

The history of transport infrastructure is also part of the landscape: the Wiedtal Route passes remnants from the old railway era that have been reclaimed by nature. Döttesfeld is also home to a former railway tunnel. These relics add a historical note alongside the area’s natural attractions and its current hiking and cycling opportunities.

A Break and a Cultural Highlight

Jagdhütte Döttesfeld is a café and beer garden with a rustic atmosphere in a natural setting. It offers another local highlight in addition to the trails and via ferrata route. The wider destination of Neuwied adds its own cultural attraction: the Roentgen Museum Neuwied has a collection of Roentgen furniture and Kinzing clocks that is unique worldwide.
