In the centre of Anschau stand St. Aegidius Church and the St. Aegidius Fountain. The church was built in 1755. Together, the two sites provide a tangible starting point for getting to know Anschau through its village centre and history.

Church, Fountain and Kläpper Tradition

The church and fountain give the village’s history a physical setting; the Kläpper tradition adds a temporal perspective. During the days of Holy Week before Easter, children in Anschau use kläppers and rattles to replace the midday and evening ringing of the bells. The tradition is therefore tied to a clearly defined period in the church year. If you would like to plan your stay around it, take the Holy Week dates for the relevant year into account when choosing your travel dates.

The old hunting lodge is also part of Anschau’s historic building fabric: it is one of the village’s extensively restored historic buildings. Anschau thus offers different points of interest for those interested in cultural history—the church and its construction date, and the hunting lodge, whose restoration is particularly noteworthy.

Events and Practical Planning

Use of the barbecue hut in Anschau requires the consent of Anschau’s local municipality. If you plan to use the hut, obtain this consent in advance.

A 2026 announcement describes the Anschau Aegidius fair as a four-day event. At the time, as in previous years, the Anschau Village Community Association (Dorfgemeinschaft Anschau e. V.) organised the events at the Aegidius Hall. If you would like to plan your stay around the fair, check the specific dates for the relevant year.

More Cultural Highlights in the Wider Mayen-Koblenz Destination

The wider Mayen-Koblenz destination has other historical highlights. Genovevaburg Castle was built in 1280 by Heinrich von Finstingen, Archbishop of Trier, and is one of Mayen’s landmarks. The history of Sayn Abbey goes back even further: it was founded around 1200, and its abbey church was consecrated in 1202. The abbey’s exterior paintings, dating from around 1255, are considered the best-preserved of the High Middle Ages in Germany. These examples offer different ways to explore history—from a castle to an abbey with significant paintings.

Industrial history takes centre stage at Sayn Ironworks. It is an anchor site on the European Route of Industrial Heritage and the only monument in Rhineland-Palatinate to receive this distinction. Following restoration, modern exhibitions and multimedia displays invite visitors to explore; Sayn Ironworks also offers guided tours and creative workshops. This regional highlight differs from Anschau’s local history in both its subject and the ways it is presented.

Volcanism and designed landscapes are also among the cultural and visitor highlights in Mayen-Koblenz. The Lava-Dome in Mendig is the German Volcano Museum. The Geyser Museum explains how the world’s highest cold-water geyser works in five exhibition areas. Schlosspark Sayn offers a contrasting landscape: commissioned by Prince Ludwig Adolf Friedrich zu Sayn-Wittgenstein-Sayn and designed by architect Carl Friedrich Thelemann, it was laid out as an English landscape garden between 1840 and 1850. The park includes a castle pond with a fountain, winding paths, numerous benches and secluded, quiet spots.
