Plaidt brings together church architecture and a circular trail with specific points of interest: St. Willibrord is a three-aisled Neo-Gothic church, while the Nettepark circular trail passes a small pond and the remains of the NoldensmĂĽhle mill. A model of the old parish church adds a possible view of its former appearance to the story of the present-day building. This makes it easy to include cultural topics and time outdoors in your travel plans.

Church and local history

The present-day three-aisled Neo-Gothic St. Willibrord Church in Plaidt was designed by Cologne architect Vinzenz Statz. The architectural style and the architect’s name offer two specific points of interest for anyone interested in church architecture: the division into three aisles and the fact that it was designed by an architect from Cologne. This makes the church a cultural and historical attraction in its own right in Plaidt.

A model at the Plaidt community hall shows what the old parish church may have looked like. It is not an exact reconstruction, but one possible interpretation of its former appearance. This distinction matters: the model does not show a confirmed view of the church as it once was, but suggests one possible appearance.

According to a description from 2017, historical stones in Plaidt were 200 and 400 years old at the time and invited visitors to look at them, rest and linger.

Nettepark circular trail and practical planning

The Nettepark circular trail in Plaidt passes a small pond that invites visitors to linger, as well as the remains of the old “Noldensmühle” paper mill. The same walk therefore offers both a chance to take a break and a glimpse of the area’s former paper production. Those interested in landscapes and industrial history will find two different reasons to take a closer look.

The circular trail is designated as accessible for people with mobility impairments and partially accessible for wheelchair users. The certification is valid from January 1, 2026, to December 31, 2028. Plan according to the classification relevant to you and check access conditions before your visit, as they may change.

Plaidt’s traditional fair took place in 2026 from September 12 through September 15 on and around the village square.

The wider Mayen-Koblenz area

In the wider Mayen-Koblenz destination, the 33-kilometre Vulkanpark Cycle Route runs from Mayen via Mendig and Kretz to Plaidt and on to Andernach. Plaidt is therefore one of the named places along the regional route. For planning purposes, it helps to distinguish this longer route from the Nettepark circular trail: it provides a wider itinerary for your trip, while the Plaidt trail description names specific places to visit locally.

Cultural attractions in the wider Mayen-Koblenz destination extend beyond Plaidt. Genovevaburg Castle in Mayen was built in 1280 by Heinrich von Finstingen, Archbishop of Trier, and is one of Mayen’s landmarks. In Mendig, the Lava-Dome is the German Volcano Museum. Sayn Ironworks is an anchor point on the European Route of Industrial Heritage and the only monument in Rhineland-Palatinate to receive this distinction. Following restoration, its modern exhibitions and multimedia presentations invite visitors to explore; Sayn Ironworks also offers guided tours and creative workshops.

Another highlight in the Mayen-Koblenz destination is Sayn Palace Park. From 1840 to 1850, architect Carl Friedrich Thelemann designed it as an English landscape garden on behalf of Prince Ludwig Adolf Friedrich zu Sayn-Wittgenstein-Sayn. The park features a castle pond with a fountain, winding paths, numerous benches and secluded, quiet spots. Together, these regional examples showcase a range of interests: architectural history, industrial heritage, volcanism and landscaped gardens.
