St. Gangolf, the Burghof and the Cross Chapel represent different historical layers in and around Mertloch. Visitors planning a stay can combine exploring the town’s architectural history with taking in the landscape and paths of the Maifeld. Mertloch is a municipality in the district of Mayen-Koblenz and is administered by the Maifeld collective municipality, whose administrative seat is Polch. When planning, it helps to distinguish between the town itself and the broader landscape of the Maifeld.

Historic Buildings and Their Dates

The parish church of St. Gangolf is a Romanesque pillar basilica, probably dating from the late 12th century. It was expanded with a tower in 1879. The Cross Chapel is located outside Mertloch on the L 82. The hall church dates from 1754 and is associated with a village path and Stations of the Cross. At BurgstraĂźe 33 is the Burghof: a hipped-roof farmstead dated 1817, with a half-timbered house and a hipped-roof barn.

The dates point to different construction phases: the probably medieval origins of St. Gangolf, the chapel from 1754, the Burghof from 1817 and the later extension of the church. Thus, rather than individual buildings, their different dates provide the guiding thread for a walk through Mertloch’s architectural history.

Places of Remembrance on the L 82

The Jewish cemetery is also located on the L 82. It is a protected heritage zone comprising an area surrounded by a hedge and numerous gravestones. Together with the Cross Chapel outside the town, this road has two clearly distinct historic sites: the cemetery and a building associated with a village path and Stations of the Cross. The cemetery’s designation as a heritage zone and the chapel’s description as a hall church dating from 1754 each offer a distinct perspective on local history.

The Maifeld: Landscape and Paths

The Maifeld landscape is characterized by broad, fertile fields on gently rolling hills, with rows of trees, hedges and scattered villages breaking up the open terrain. Two distinct options are available for planning routes. The hiking routes around Mertloch include the Pyrmonter Felsensteig. The Maifeld cycling and hiking trail follows a nearly level former railway line between MĂĽnstermaifeld, Polch, Ochtendung and Mayen. While the Pyrmonter Felsensteig is primarily a circular hiking route, the Maifeld cycling and hiking trail is defined by its former railway line and the towns mentioned. Check current trail conditions before setting out.

Practical Information for Your Stay

Mertloch has a barbecue hut that can be rented for celebrations and other occasions. Check the booking conditions before making plans, as they may change. There is also a water playground; check its availability and condition before travelling.

The Streckenhäuschen inn is located at Am Bahnhof 5. As food service and offerings may change, check in advance whether a visit or a meal is currently possible. This way, you can address the practical questions separately: the booking conditions for the barbecue hut, the availability and condition of the water playground, and the current dining options at the address given.
