Kirchwald combines sweeping views of the Eifel with a nature trail through a landscape of streams, woodland and ponds. The Panorama Hiking Trail and the Kirchwalder Auen nature trail offer different experiences: one features views and far-reaching vistas, while the other is a footpath of around 1.3 km along a stream. St. Dionysius parish church and a small wayside shrine on Mohrsberg add local cultural sights to the natural attractions.
Panorama Trail and Viewpoints
The Panorama Hiking Trail offers open views across the Eifel landscape along almost its entire route. On a clear day, the view extends as far as the HunsrĂĽck, Westerwald and Taunus. Another panorama opens up across the Nitztal valley towards Hohe Acht. The views are therefore a central feature of the trail; vistas of the more distant regions are explicitly dependent on good visibility.
At Mohrsberg, the route passes an upper south-facing slope characterised by dense juniper, partly overgrown with scrub. The Nitzblick viewpoint is a particular highlight on the Panorama Hiking Trail in Kirchwald. It can be reached via Zum Nitzblick road, then along a paved path past the barbecue shelter, and finally via a woodland path of about 100 m. This route description helps you understand how to reach the viewpoint.
The Panorama Trail starts at the village square and returns there. Directional arrows, distance markers and location signs show the way. There is a car park for the Panorama Trail at the village square, next to St. Dionysius parish church. As local parking information may change, check it before travelling.
Kirchwalder Auen Nature Trail
The Kirchwalder Auen nature trail is around 1.3 km long and follows a stream through woodland and a landscape of ponds. Three bridges are part of the route. Unlike the Panorama Hiking Trail, the focus here is on the stream, woodland and ponds rather than far-reaching views. This makes the two trails different ways to experience the outdoors in Kirchwald.
The protected Kirchwalder Auen area includes a wetland with three ponds arranged in a row. Its diverse wildlife includes a rich variety of insects and numerous birds. Groups of five or more can take a free guided tour of the nature trail; donations are welcome. Confirm the arrangements before your trip.
Village Church, Wayside Shrine and Events
Today's St. Dionysius parish church in Kirchwald was built in 1906/1907 and consecrated in 1908. At the foot of Mohrsberg, a small wayside shrine dedicated to Saint Roch and the Virgin Mary stands on the Panorama Trail. It offers a welcome opportunity to take a break. The church and shrine offer different points of interest: the parish church is beside the village square, while the small place of worship is located on the trail at Mohrsberg.
Various events and festivals take place in Kirchwald throughout the year. If you would like to plan your trip around an event, check the dates for your specific travel period. Cyclists will also find a Stopp-o-Mat measuring station in the village. Before planning a timed cycling test, confirm that the station is currently in operation.
Planning Your Visit
When choosing activities, you can focus on two clearly distinct aspects of nature: the Panorama Hiking Trail and its viewpoints, or the Kirchwalder Auen, with its stream, woodland, ponds and bridges. The circular trail starts and ends at the village square; the nature trail is approximately 1.3 km long. These details can help you choose a trail based on what you would like to see, without assuming a walking time.
Route details may also be useful when planning: the final section to Nitzblick is a woodland path of about 100 m, while the Panorama Trail is marked with directional arrows, distance markers and location signs. If you are interested in nature and local culture, you can visit the Auen, the viewpoints, the parish church and the wayside shrine as separate stops. Events and the measuring station for cyclists add to the options if their dates or operating status fit your plans.
