Trechtingshausen combines striking castles with trails through the Morgenbach Valley. Rheinstein Castle, Reichenstein Castle and St. Clement’s Chapel are considered important historical destinations near the town. A local circular hiking trail links the two castles and the chapel with the Morgenbach Valley, surrounding valleys and the Schweizerhaus viewpoint. This means that both castle visits and trails through the landscape are central to planning.
Rheinstein Castle: History and a Self-Guided Tour
Rheinstein Castle dates back to a customs castle from the 14th century. An information system and a floor plan support a self-guided tour of the castle. Access from the parking lot is via a steadily uphill footpath 380 metres long; the walk is estimated to take around six to ten minutes. Take the climb into account when planning your visit: Rheinstein Castle is not wheelchair accessible.
Reichenstein Castle and Its Museum
Reichenstein Castle stands on a rocky outcrop almost directly above the Rhine. Between 1899 and 1902, it was rebuilt as a neo-Gothic residential castle; it opened to the public in 1936. The castle museum focuses on knights and Rhine Romanticism and offers an audio guide. Its collections on display include armour, weapons and hunting trophies from around the world, as well as decorative stove tiles from the Rheinböllerhütte. The exhibits therefore cover topics ranging from furnishings and hunting to regional craftsmanship.
There is also a special activity for children in the Knight’s Room: they can dress up and ride a wooden horse. Restaurant Puricelli at Reichenstein Castle focuses on seasonal cuisine and locally sourced ingredients. If you would like to eat there, check the latest restaurant information in advance.
St. Clement’s Chapel and Local Legends
St. Clement’s Chapel below Reichenstein is associated with two local origin stories. One of them draws on the story of the robber knights of Reichenstein. The chapel thus adds another historical connection to the castle route, while the two castle visits each have a distinct focus: Rheinstein represents the medieval customs castle and a tour with an information system; Reichenstein, its museum, collections and neo-Gothic architectural history.
Hiking and Choosing a Route
The local circular hiking trail connects the castles and St. Clement’s Chapel with the Morgenbach Valley, surrounding valleys and the Schweizerhaus viewpoint. Trechtingshausen is also a starting point for hiking and climbing routes near the forests and rocks of the Morgenbach Valley. If you are planning a stage rather than a circular route, the RheinBurgenWeg offers a section from Bingen to Trechtingshausen. These two options provide different kinds of guidance: a local circular route with several named destinations, or a stage between two towns.
Getting There and Getting Around
The Mittelrheinbahn runs from Bingen Central Station to Trechtingshausen; the journey takes around four minutes. Trechtingshausen is the first stop after Bingen Central Station. Timetables and stopping patterns may change, so check the timetable before departure. From Trechtingshausen station, Reichenstein Castle is about a five- to seven-minute walk.
A different approach is described for Rheinstein Castle: the footpath starts at the parking lot and climbs steadily uphill. If you are planning to visit both castles, consider these access routes separately and take each starting point into account. This makes it easier to coordinate your choice of museum visit, circular hike or trail stage with your journey.
