Sprendlingen combines Rheinhessen wine culture with trails leading to or around Wißberg. At 270 metres, Wißberg is one of the highest elevations in Rheinhessen. A hiking route to Wißberg starts in Sprendlingen, as does a cycling loop around the hill. When planning your trip, you can choose between different focuses: hiking with nature and cultural themes, or cycling through a series of towns.
Via Vinea and Trails around Wißberg
Via Vinea is a wine-themed hiking trail around Wißberg. It includes a barefoot path, a fossil shell hunt, and an herb garden maintained by the Sprendlingen rural women's association. Along the circular trail, there are also places to play, observe, and try things out. A glass viewing pavilion offers an overview of the region's individual villages.
On the western side of Wißberg, a geological trail offers insights into sites where fossil shells and Iron Age Hallstatt-period clay fragments have been found. If you are mainly looking for scenic views, the Panorama Trail offers a different focus: it runs around the golf course and provides views across the region. The Höhenwanderweg (High-altitude Hiking Trail) passes through fields, vineyards, and woodland. Its viewpoints and rest areas include the Zotzenheimer Horn.
Cycling through several towns
A cycling loop around Wißberg starts in Sprendlingen on Gau-Bickelheimer Straße. From there, it goes through Gau-Bickelheim, Gau-Weinheim, and St. Johann before returning to Sprendlingen. The route as described has a clear starting point and return destination, while also passing through several towns.
Another cycling route starts at Bettenheimer Hof in Sprendlingen and follows the Höhenwanderweg towards Zotzenheimer Horn. One route option heads towards Aspisheim; the route also includes Horrweiler, Welgesheim, and Zotzenheim. This gives you different route options, rather than all cycling tours following the same sequence of towns.
Wine and local character
Sprendlingen is known for its wines and distinctive wine culture. Classic grape varieties include Riesling, Silvaner, and Burgundy varieties; they thrive in the local soils of limestone, loess, sand, and clay. Wine culture is also a theme of Via Vinea, which was designed as a wine-themed hiking trail. This allows you to explore the area's connection to wine through both the grape varieties and soils mentioned here and a trail featuring several different stops.
Culture in and between the towns
Between Ober-Hilbersheim and Sprendlingen stands Napoleon Tower, modelled on a historic telegraph mast. In Sprendlingen itself, the local history museum is housed in the former Reuther estate and includes the private collection of the Genther family. If you plan a visit, check locally in advance to find out how you can view the collection. Via Vinea also includes an arena with five columns, each decorated with a unique face.
Getting there and accommodation
Sprendlingen is connected to the A61 motorway. There is also a rail and bus network, supplemented by a community bus. If you plan to arrive by train or bus, check the connections for your travel date and planned routes.
If you are planning the hiking trail to Wißberg or the Wißberg cycling loop starting on Gau-Bickelheimer Straße, include hotels in Sprendlingen in your search. For the longer cycling tour, the start at Bettenheimer Hof is another specific point of reference. This lets you choose your accommodation based on the routes you actually plan to take.
