The Rhine riverfront in Heidenfahrt combines a promenade and a grassy area with opportunities to observe nature; in Heidesheim, Windeck Castle and a church with furnishings from several centuries add to the picture. This brings two different perspectives together in Heidesheim am Rhein: spending time by the river and exploring the history of its buildings and the town. If you are looking for a holiday apartment, these themes can help you decide which side of the town you would like to shape your trip most.

Riverside in Heidenfahrt

The redesigned waterfront area in Heidenfahrt brings recreation and nature conservation together. Alongside the promenade is a grassy area for relaxing; waterbirds can be found near the riverbank. Views also open up towards the Rheingau. The promenade and grassy area serve different purposes: one runs alongside the waterfront, while the other is intended for relaxation. The focus is therefore not only on a landscaped place to take a break, but also on nature by the water. Those who want to combine time outdoors with nature conservation and wildlife watching will find a landscape-focused experience here that differs clearly from Heidesheim’s architectural history.

Church: Building Phases and Furnishings

The church in Heidesheim was built between 1791 and 1811; a transept was added in 1960. A transept is the part of a church that stands across its main section; its addition marks a distinct, much later phase here. The building history thus spans from the late 18th and early 19th centuries into the 20th century.

The furnishings date from an earlier period than the building itself. The church contains altars from the Carmelite Church in Mainz, dating to around 1720, as well as three life-size wooden statues of saints from the same period. The choir stalls are dated to around 1700. The altars provide a specific link to Mainz, while the statues and choir stalls reveal further layers of history through their dates. The history of the church building is therefore distinct from that of its furnishings: some of the inventory predates its construction between 1791 and 1811.

Windeck Castle and the Early History of the Town

Windeck Castle takes us much further back in time. It stands in the centre of Heidesheim and was built in 1209 by Herdegen von Winternheim. It was probably originally a moated castle, surrounded by a moat and a wall. The year of construction is precisely stated; the original form is considered probable. The castle thus combines an early historical landmark with a cautiously qualified account of its layout.

Comparing the dates reveals an interesting chronological gap: Windeck Castle dates to 1209; the church was not built until between 1791 and 1811, yet it contains furnishings from around 1700 and 1720. The transept was added later still, in 1960. The church therefore represents not a single building period, but several layers comprising construction, older furnishings, and an extension. The castle, by contrast, offers above all an early, clearly dated historical landmark, complemented by the probable form of a moated castle.
