The Lenneberg Forest gives Budenheim a distinctive natural character: sandy dunes, an extensive network of trails and a short nature trail. The area also has Roman settlement sites and a history that stretches from Butenheim to festival traditions. Visitors planning a stay can explore nature, hiking and culture as separate highlights.

Lenneberg Forest: Trails and Nature

The Lenneberg Forest covers 708 hectares, 44.07 percent of which lies within Budenheim. The landscape is shaped by dunes and predominantly sandy soil. The forest has a 70-kilometer network of trails for walkers and hikers. Rare and sometimes endangered plant and animal species associated with sandy soils and a dry climate can also be found here.

A shorter option is the Naturrallye–Walderlebnispfad Lennebergwald (Nature Rally–Lenneberg Forest Adventure Trail): the route is about 2.5 kilometers long and takes approximately one hour. Along the way, visitors can try a tree telephone, a balancing log and a xylophone. The trail is generally considered suitable for strollers along its entire length, although the surface may vary. Check the route details before your visit; individual features may be renewed or changed.

The Lenneberg Tower is another distinctive feature. Built in 1880, it stands on the 176.8-meter-high Lenneberg, which offers panoramic views. The forest area thus brings together a clearly defined adventure trail, a longer network of trails and a historic tower as distinct attractions.

Roman Traces and Budenheim’s History

Four Roman settlement sites within Budenheim’s cadastral area are considered villae rusticae. The town’s historical name has also been recorded: in the Codex Laures Hamensis, a collection of manuscripts from Lorsch Abbey, Budenheim appears as “Butenheim.”

The Catholic Church of St. Pankratius was built between 1734 and 1747. The historic church is occasionally used for concerts, exhibitions and special services. Budenheim’s Kerb festival dates back to the church’s consecration on September 3, 1747. The Blütenfest (Blossom Festival) began on April 23 and 24, 1955, with the election of a Blossom Queen. Together, these dates tell of different local traditions: church history and festivals whose beginnings lie in different centuries.

Ferry and Practical Information

The ferry service between Budenheim and the Rheingau was first mentioned in a 1019 donation to Walluf. Many cycling tourists use the Budenheim ferry during the summer months. If you plan to include it in a cycling trip, check the current operating dates in advance.

Timetable information is available for bus route 68 between Hochheim and Budenheim; schedules may change. Budenheim’s public transport information also includes an interactive map showing meinRad stations. Check the latest timetable and station details before traveling.

In the Broader Mainz-Bingen Destination

In the southern part of Mainz-Bingen district, the landscape is shaped by the rolling hills of Rheinhessen, specialty fruit and vegetable crops including asparagus, and extensive vineyards producing Rheinhessen wine. Rheinhessen covers 26,300 hectares of vineyards and is Germany’s largest wine-growing region.

The routes in the broader Mainz-Bingen destination also offer their own points of reference: the approximately 75-kilometer Rheinterrassenweg runs from Worms to Mainz. Oppenheim and Bodenheim are valley stage destinations that make it easier to access the Rhine Terrace. The Rhine Cycle Route in the Rheinhessen region runs for around 90 kilometers from Bingen am Rhein to Worms. The two routes differ in activity and course, helping visitors place the wider regional setting alongside Budenheim’s forest trails and local history.
