Altenglan combines outdoor activities with culture and a leisure pool. From here, a hiking trail leads to the old provost’s building on Remigiusberg; the Glantal Draisine runs along a disused railway line between Altenglan and Lauterecken. There is also a motorhome stopover next to the draisine and a swimming pool with several pools. This gives you a choice of different ways to plan your trip: a hike, a draisine ride or a day at the pool, complemented by historic sites and regional routes.

Hike or ride the draisine

The Glantal Draisine runs along the disused railway line between Altenglan and Lauterecken. The vehicles are powered by pedaling or assisted by an electric motor; there is no oncoming traffic on the route. At stops, you can visit museums, cultural attractions and regional restaurants. Hand-powered vehicles and models with wheelchair platforms are also available. The main difference between the two activities is how you get around: the hike leads to the old provost’s building on Remigiusberg, while the draisine ride focuses on the railway journey and possible stops along the way.

Motorhome stopover and swimming pool

The motorhome stopover in Altenglan is right next to the draisine and the Fritz Wunderlich Cycle Route. It has four pitches and is wheelchair accessible. Facilities include electricity, a water supply and waste disposal. Important for planning your trip: water is unavailable from October to April. As stopover details may change, we recommend checking the latest information before you arrive.

The sports and leisure pool offers heated swimming and leisure pools, including a 50-metre multipurpose pool with diving boards, a children’s paddling pool and a leisure pool with a 60-metre slide. A playground adds to the facilities. The swimming pool is wheelchair accessible, and free parking is available. The pool offers a different way to spend your stay from hiking or riding the draisine.

Provost’s Church and Michelsburg on Remigiusberg

The Provost’s Church of St. Remigius and the ruins of Michelsburg are close together on Remigiusberg, separated by a shallow depression. The Provostry of St. Remigius was a Benedictine monastery from 1127 to 1526. The provost’s church is the only surviving building of the former monastery complex. Inside is the historically valuable tombstone of Count Friedrich I of Veldenz, who died in 1327.

The ruins of Michelsburg are open to visitors free of charge year-round, but are not maintained in winter. Take local conditions into account when planning your visit. Together with the hike from Altenglan to the old provost’s building, the site offers a clear historical focus on Remigiusberg: the church and its monastic history stand alongside the ruins, separated from the church by a shallow depression.

In the wider Kusel destination

Burg Lichtenberg is also part of the wider Kusel destination. At 425 metres long, it is one of Germany’s longest castle ruins and the largest castle complex in the Palatinate. The Pfälzer Musikantenmuseum and the Geoskop are located inside. Alongside the historic sites on Remigiusberg, Kusel therefore offers another distinct connection to castle and museum history.

The Veldenz Hiking Trail is also part of this wider regional context: it starts at Burg Lichtenberg above Thallichtenberg and ends in the town of Lauterecken, known as the town of Veldenz. The trail is around 60 kilometres long, has been awarded the “Leading Quality Trail – Best of Europe” quality seal and can be divided into five stages. It passes through two nature reserves. Compared with the hike from Altenglan to the old provost’s building, this is a considerably longer route with several stages; the two trails therefore offer different options for planning a hike.
