In Katzweiler, open-air theater and village history meet trails and the landscape around the pond. The different route lengths offer a concrete guide for planning: they range from a short stretch to the village mill and loops of a few kilometers to the approximately 9 km Himmelstour. There are also cultural destinations and leisure activities to shape your stay around your own interests.

Landscape Pond and Route Options

The Mühlwanderweg starts at the village square in Katzweiler and reaches the village mill after about 100 m. If you would like to include the landscape pond, you can take a detour there along the way. The pond lies between the Lauter River and the railway line, covers about 4,000 m² and is encircled by a path with benches for resting. There is also a Kneipp footbath right by the pond, which is especially popular with hikers and cyclists during the summer months.

A 2,000 m² playground is also located right by the landscape pond. Its facilities may change; if they are important to your plans, check the latest information before your visit. This lets you treat the waterside path and a stop at the playground as separate destinations in Katzweiler, without equating the loop’s distance with the time it takes to walk.

The accessible Erlebnisweg, inaugurated in 2012, passes sights and places to stop for refreshments. It can be walked as a 3 km or 6.7 km loop. A longer option is the Himmelstour, established in mid-2019: the approximately 9 km circular route leads from Katzweiler via Himmelsblick, Engelsberg and Himmelreich back to the starting point. Three routes are designated for Nordic walking in Katzweiler; the Nordic walking trail network comprises more than 20 km of signposted paths through woods and fields.

Village Mill and Open-Air Theater

The village mill dates from 1756 and has an overshot waterwheel measuring 8.40 meters in diameter. The village mill wheel in the town center is considered the largest mill wheel in southwestern Germany; the mill is no longer in operation. The MĂĽhlwanderweg passes the village mill about 100 m from the village square and also offers the opportunity to take a detour to the landscape pond.

The Katzweiler Open-Air Theater is located on the edge of town in a small valley, the Eselsdelle, nestled between two wooded slopes. Its program includes children’s theater, musicals, plays and boulevard comedies. As individual productions change seasonally, it is worth checking performance dates for your travel period. The tourist association and the open-air theater use rooms in the old Waaghaus on the village square in Waagstraße; advance ticket sales for the open-air theater also take place there.

Horse Riding and Places to Eat

The Bonanza Ranch in Katzweiler offers covered-wagon rides, riding lessons for beginners and advanced riders, rides through the countryside and pony rides. The Bonanza Ranch Reiterstube is a restaurant with a beer garden. If you plan to visit, check the latest information about opening times and access beforehand.

When looking for a holiday apartment in Katzweiler, one simple planning question can help: would you like your stay to focus more on open-air theater and village history, or on trails and the landscape pond? The local offerings differ both in theme and in the stated route lengths. Plan a theater visit around the seasonally changing performances, and bear in mind that the Kneipp footbath is especially popular during the summer months if you are planning a loop by the pond.
