Fischbach is an ideal place to explore through hiking and traces of history. A specific point of reference is right in the village: the sports ground on Frontalstraße is considered the starting point of the Mönchsweg. Fischbach is part of the Enkenbach-Alsenborn collective municipality in the district of Kaiserslautern. The collective municipality lies at the scenic transition between the Palatinate Forest and the North Palatine Uplands—a regional setting that provides a backdrop for hiking and nature activities.

Hiking with a starting point in Fischbach

The Mönchsweg starts at the sports ground on Frontalstraße. It passes historic landmarks spanning the period from prehistory to almost the present day, including Roman and early modern traces. The Mönchsweg includes two hiking trails around Hochspeyer, approximately 12 and 13.5 kilometres long, respectively.

Mönchsweg I offers opportunities to refresh yourself in Fischbach. If you are planning to stop at a particular place, it is best to check what the individual businesses offer. Fischbach also helped create a 60-kilometre network of hiking trails together with Hochspeyer, Enkenbach-Alsenborn and Mehlingen. Before setting out on a hike, it is worth checking the latest trail conditions.

Other trails in the collective municipality

The collective municipality has an extensive network of hiking trails, including local circular routes and the Leinbachtal landscape experience area. A dedicated themed offering is the “Rätselhafte Zeitzeichen” network, which connects more than 50 stations. Mehlinger Heide lies within the wider collective municipality and is a nature and bird sanctuary; it has information boards and a heathland nature trail.

Cycling routes are another regional option: the Alsenztal cycle path is one cycling option in the collective municipality. One access point to the Palatinate Forest Mountain Bike Park is in Hochspeyer. Traces of historic ironworking and mining can also be seen elsewhere in the collective municipality. Frankenstein Castle and churches in the collective municipality can be visited inside or viewed from outside.

History of Monastery, Lordship and Labour

Fischbach is historically linked to the Lordship of Diemerstein. Fischbach was first mentioned in 1221, in connection with the transfer of the Hochspeyer parish church and Fischbach’s Marienkapelle to Höningen Abbey. Another turning point came in 1471, when a convent for women was founded in Fischbach and occupied by Augustinian canonesses from Lippstadt. The two dates point to different ecclesiastical connections in the village’s history.

The use of the land and work in the village have also left historical traces. In 1576, Fischbach’s properties were used as an agricultural estate with sheep farming. A quarry opened in Fischbach in 1887 and soon employed around 50 workers. Altenhof, a settlement associated with Fischbach, was formerly called Hetzelbach and was assigned to Diemerstein Castle as an estate in the 15th century.
