A sculpture garden in Bürgerpark, museums offering insights into rural life and art history, and opportunities for hiking and cycling give Wörth on the Rhine many different sides. When planning your trip, you can focus on culture, a day of swimming or tours around the region. The cycling routes described here also vary: some pass through several types of landscape, while others connect the Rhine with the vineyards of the German Wine Route.
Art and history in Wörth on the Rhine
The Skulpturengarten 2000 is located in Bürgerpark. Its eight stations are arranged around a central winged figure and made of red sandstone and copper. The installation brings several stations together in a single work of art; its materials and figure give the garden its distinctive form.
The Laurentiushof local history museum is dedicated to the simple, traditional way of life of the region’s rural population. It has a working bread oven in which bread and tarte flambée are baked occasionally. Since baking does not take place regularly and the timing can vary, it is best to check in advance whether a baking session will fit into your stay.
In Schaidt, the Viehstrichmuseum offers another glimpse into the past: its exhibition covers 400 years of history and features traditional crafts, domestic life, and items from agriculture and forestry. Visitors particularly interested in the region’s everyday and working life will find different themes here from those at the Laurentiushof, which focuses on the way of life of the rural population.
Painting is also linked to Wörth. The animal painter Heinrich von Zügel maintained his artistic studio there for decades. The Heinrich von Zügel Gallery in the Old Town Hall displays an extensive collection relating to the Wörth School of Painting, considered a former center of German Impressionism. So, alongside a look at everyday life in the past, the program can also include art and its historical context.
Swimming and green spaces
Badepark Wörth has ten swimming pools, a wave pool and a double slide more than 60 meters long. If you are planning a day of swimming, check the current opening hours in advance. This makes it easy to treat Badepark as a separate activity, whether your other days are devoted more to museums or outdoor activities.
There are hiking and walking opportunities in the Bienwald near Büchelberg and Schaidt. Stream valleys and old oak trees characterize the landscape. In Schaidt, hikers can also take the Westwall hiking trail to explore the region’s eventful history. The discovery trails in Büchelberg offer families information about orchards and bees. These activities have different emphases: nature is the focus of the discovery trails, while the Westwall hiking trail explores history.
Cycling routes with different destinations
Wörth on the Rhine is considered a good starting point for cycling tours along the Rhine, toward the German Wine Route and into Alsace. Two regional routes described here show how different the possible destinations can be. The cross-border PAMINA Rhine Park North Cycling Route runs through the Southern Palatinate, northern Baden and Alsace. The Petronella Rhine Cycling Route leads from the Rhine to the vineyards of the German Wine Route. One route spans several regions and countries; the other connects a river landscape with vineyards.
When choosing accommodation, you can therefore first consider which themes you want to shape your stay: art and museums, swimming, hiking or cycling tours. Information about the individual activities can help you distinguish between these interests without needing to combine them into a fixed itinerary.
