Churches, a manor house and two heritage trails give Wolsfeld a variety of points of interest: the Old St Hubertus Church has been a pilgrimage church since the 15th century, while the New St Hubertus Church was built in 1926. The village lies in the Nimstal valley, amid wooded surroundings and in the South Eifel Nature Park. Two perspectives are at the heart of a stay here: Wolsfeld’s architectural history and walks of very different lengths.

Churches from Different Periods

The Old St Hubertus Church brings together several historic milestones. It has been a pilgrimage church since the 15th century and features a Romanesque choir tower and a two-aisled hall dating from around 1500. Inside is a polychrome stone altar from the late Renaissance, dated 1620 and attributed to the circle of Trier sculptor Hans Ruprecht Hoffmann. “Two-aisled” means that the hall has two naves.

The New St Hubertus Church offers a later contrast: its 1926 hall is designed in post-classical forms. Comparing the two churches spans the period from older architectural and decorative styles to a church built in the 20th century.

Castle, Village Centre and Other Heritage

Wolsfeld Castle, also called the Burg, is a manor house built in the 17th century for the Lords of Enschringen. Its lintel is dated 1664. More than 50 village renewal measures have been carried out, mainly in the historic village centre around the castle; several buildings received the Baukultur EIFEL Award. The focus is therefore not just on a single building, but also on the development of the village centre. In Wolsfelderberg, the St Hubertus Fountain and St Hubertus Cross date from 1691.

Two Heritage Trails, Different Distances

The Bitburger LandGang Heritage Tour is rated easy. It is 4.3 kilometres long, takes about an hour, and starts and ends at the church car park in Wolsfeld. The tour offers views towards Wolsfelderberg. It also draws attention to the production of Eifel spirits and liqueurs, linking architectural heritage with regional products.

The Baukultur EIFEL themed trail is considerably shorter: it is also rated easy and measures 487 metres. It starts on EuropastraĂźe by the church and ends on Holsthumer StraĂźe in Wolsfeld. There are therefore two different distances to choose from: a short route between two streets or a tour of about an hour that returns to the church car park. Check the latest route information before setting out, as details may change.

The Heritage Tour is considered suitable for families. Wolsfeld also has a playground and a meadow with llamas and alpacas. As visitor attractions may change, check the latest information about these offerings before your visit.
