Wißmannsdorf lies on the middle reaches of the Prüm, northwest of Bitburg. For walks, you can choose between a short loop around the village and the 16.7-kilometer, moderate circular Trail No. 22 in the South Eifel Nature Park. Historic wayside crosses, the parish church and chapels add local history to the natural attractions.
Hiking in the Echtersbach Valley and along the Prüm
Trail No. 22 in the South Eifel Nature Park starts and ends at Place Montaigut on the main road in Wißmannsdorf. At 16.7 kilometers, it is the longer of the two hiking options and is rated moderate. The route passes through the Echtersbach Valley and Hammer Büsch, a hillside forest. Along the way, you can enjoy panoramic views of Hamm Castle.
Near Biersdorf am See, the trail runs parallel for several kilometers to the Bitburger Brewery Route for Nordic walking. The Kleine Prümschleife, by contrast, is a short circular trail around Wißmannsdorf. Part of it follows the Prüm, passes a small local forest and offers views across the Bitburger Gutland. Check route information before setting out.
Wißmannsdorf lies in the green, rolling Eifel landscape. The Prüm is a tributary of the Sauer and flows into the nearby Bitburg Reservoir. Wißmannsdorf also offers idyllic routes for cycling.
Wayside crosses, a church and a sandstone tradition
Wißmannsdorf is home to the Catholic parish church of St. Martin and St. Rosa; there are chapels in the districts of Hermesdorf and Koosbüsch. Wayside crosses are also part of the village’s history: Wißmannsdorf has crosses dating from the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries. The Laschkreuz dates from 1579 and is considered the most artistically elaborate wayside cross in the Trier district.
Wißmannsdorf also had a sandstone-working tradition that lasted for more than 400 years and ended in the mid-1950s. While the wayside crosses date back several centuries, this craft tradition continued until the mid-20th century.
