Cycling and local history offer two ways to explore Wilsecker. One follows the Kyll Valley Cycle Path; the other leads to the Wilsecker Linden Tree, the old shaft cross and the chapel.

Cycling Route and Rest Stop by the Linden Tree

The Kyll Valley Cycle Path runs from Kyllburg to Bitburg-Erdorf through Wilsecker and directly past the Wilsecker Linden Tree. Next to the tree are a shelter, a rest area and information signs. Two benches offer a view of Kyllburg’s collegiate hill. This makes the cycling connection concrete: the route passes through the village and by a spot where a place to rest and a view of the collegiate hill come together. When planning your trip, you can distinguish between the route itself as an activity and the linden tree as a named place to take a break.

Two Historical Dates

An old shaft cross made of light sandstone stands by the Wilsecker Linden Tree. Its capital bears the year 1512. A different date applies to the new chapel in Wilsecker: its construction was completed in November 1862. The year on the cross can be seen on its capital; the chapel date, by contrast, marks the completion of its construction. This distinction between a visible date and a completed building makes the two dates easy to compare: they concern different structures and different kinds of information.

More Things to Discover in the Eifelkreis Bitburg-PrĂĽm

The wider travel destination of Eifelkreis Bitburg-PrĂĽm offers other clearly distinct themes: mining, palaeontology, military history and castle culture.

The Mühlenberger Stollen Bleialf visitor mine includes a mining trail with numerous information panels on the area’s mining history. One-hour guided tours of the Mühlenberger Stollen are also available. Visitors learn about ore mining in Bleialf, from geology to applied technology. The mining trail and its panels therefore offer a different way to explore the subject than a guided tour through the tunnel. Check seasonal visitor information before planning a tour.

The Devonium in Waxweiler presents complex topics in palaeontology and the science of fossil life in a playful way. In contrast to mining in Bleialf, the focus here is on fossils and scientific concepts. The Westwall Museum offers another historical perspective: it is housed across three accessible levels of a bunker. Its military history exhibition is displayed in underground corridors and rooms. The Devonium presents palaeontology in a playful way; the Westwall Museum displays its military history exhibition in underground spaces.

The water castle of Rittersdorf, around 700 years old, has been preserved almost unchanged since it was built. It offers an impressive picture of late-medieval and Renaissance domestic culture in the early modern period. The castle houses a privately run restaurant serving fine regional cuisine. Check before your trip whether the restaurant is open.
