Up to 50 metres high, the Lias sandstone formations shape the landscape around Prümzurlay. The town lies in the narrow valley of the Prüm and is part of the German-Luxembourg Nature Park Southern Eifel. The valley and cliffs give your stay a clear focus: nature in the hilly Southern Eifel and the history of Prümer Castle take centre stage.

Valley and Cliff Landscape

The area around Prümzurlay offers hiking trails and cycling routes through the hilly, wooded landscape of the Southern Eifel. The geological connection is also evident at the castle: while the sandstone formations shape the landscape around the town, the ruins stand on their own 30-metre-high Lias sandstone cliff above the Prüm Valley. This makes it possible to combine the nature and culture themes of your stay without suggesting that they refer to the same destination.

Hiking Trails and Natural Monument

Southern Eifel Nature Park Route No. 59 is a moderately difficult circular hike covering 11.2 kilometres, with 436 metres of ascent and descent. Felsenweg 5 – Prümer Castle is also rated as moderately difficult; the circular hike is 17.1 kilometres long, and its stated duration is 4 hours 30 minutes. The distances, elevation gain and stated duration offer specific information to help you plan; the shared difficulty rating is only one part of the comparison.

The premium hiking trail Felsenweg 5 – Prümer Castle is named after the ruins above Prümzurlay. The route passes the Prümer Burg settlement and reaches the ruins. The Irreler Waterfalls are also along this trail: between Prümzurlay and Irrel, rapids on the Prüm form this natural monument. Conditions at the rapids vary seasonally. Check the route and current conditions before setting out; diversions may change the route.

Prümerburg and Local History

Prümerburg was probably built in the 12th century. The ruins are freely accessible year-round; check local conditions before visiting. The surviving structures include the southern gable wall of the palas and a vaulted cellar accessible by stairs. The ruins are connected to the Katzenkopf/Westwall Memorial by Felsenweg 5.

The Graulkreuz in Prümzurlay marks a different historical note: an inscription records that it was erected in 1748. Thus, the presumed medieval castle and the dated cross represent different periods in the town’s history.
