Oberkail lies at an altitude of 360 metres in the natural landscape of the Southern Eifel, surrounded by meadows and forests. A forest nature trail, two hiking options and historic buildings offer a variety of highlights for a visit to the village.

Hikes with Different Highlights

Along around 50 information boards, the Oberkail forest nature trail introduces deciduous and coniferous trees. The names of the trees are given in German, English and the local dialect. This way, the trail combines information about tree species with their names in several languages.

The Oberkail-Himmerod Loop is 15.5 kilometres long and classified as moderate. It starts and ends either at the Oberkail community hall or at Himmerod Abbey. Forest and open terrain alternate along the route, with narrow natural trails following streams.

The OK2 circular trail leads to Frohnert Chapel, which offers panoramic views, and follows the Kailbach Valley to the BiermĂĽhle, which has been renovated with great care. Himmerod Abbey is also a highlight of the Oberkail-Himmerod Loop. It includes a monastery garden and historic water channels that supplied the former fishpond system.

If you are choosing between the routes, the loop—with its changing terrain and abbey—offers different highlights from the OK2, which features the chapel, views and Biermühle. Before your hike, check route details and conditions, as well as information about nearby sights.

Frohnert Chapel and Architectural History

Frohnert Chapel was built in 1646 on the hill between Oberkail and Schwarzenborn. It is an octagonal replica of the Chapel of the Ascension on the Mount of Olives in Jerusalem, and was once a popular pilgrimage site.

The octagonal central structure incorporates elements of Late Gothic and Renaissance architecture. The Stations of the Cross also have a documented history: they initially comprised seven stations and were expanded to 14 in 1892.

The Catholic parish church of St Michael is a hall church dating from 1789; its west tower is thought to date from 1587. Gravestones and crosses from the 18th and early 19th centuries have been preserved on the tower and in the churchyard. The church thus brings together architectural elements and memorials from different periods.

The former Counts of Manderscheid’s Castle of Kail forms a heritage area containing structural remains of a former four-winged moated castle. These date mainly from the 17th century and around 1700. Another heritage area on Kyllburger Straße preserves a row of five farmsteads, characteristic of Oberkail’s expansion in the 19th century.

An Eifel Tradition in Oberkail

Local history also includes a custom observed during the days of Holy Week leading up to Easter: children replace the church bells with clappers. Oberkail thus keeps alive an Eifel tradition that offers another facet of the village alongside its visible historic buildings.
