Neidenbach is located in the Kyllburg Forest Eifel and combines a layered local history with a variety of hiking opportunities. When planning a stay, it is worth distinguishing between the main attractions: historic traces and buildings in the village, or trails in and around Neidenbach. This question can also help when choosing a holiday apartment: would you like to devote most of your time to local history, or explore trails with different routes?

Roman Traces and Local History

Until around 1800, Neidenbach was divided between a part belonging to the Electorate of Trier and a part of the Duchy of Luxembourg. Extensive traces of Roman settlements can be found along the northern boundary of the municipal area. A boundary stone bearing the inscription FINES PA GI CARUCUM was found west of Neidenbach on a Roman road. The village’s history thus brings together two topics from widely separated periods: traces of Roman settlement and the division that persisted until around 1800.

Buildings from Different Periods

Several building periods come together at St. Peter’s Parish Church. It is a plastered Baroque-style building dating from 1924 to 1926. The window surrounds and chancel dating from 1778 have been preserved; the west tower, including the bell storey, dates from the 16th or early 17th century. The dates therefore range from older architectural features to the church building of the 1920s.

At Densborner Straße 14 and 16, two single-storey houses and their associated outbuildings, dating from the first half of the 19th century, form a protected historic area. At the intersection of Röderweg and Kyllburger Straße stands a simple wayside chapel made of rubble stone, built in 1933. The group of houses and the chapel add further examples of local architectural history to the church.

Compare Hiking Trails

Near Neidenbach, the marked St. Thomas Nature Trail runs for 2.5 kilometres through the Heilenbach Valley in the Zwischen UeĂź und Kyll landscape conservation area. It leads from St. Thomas via St. Thomas Monastery to the Neidenbach Waterfalls.

The Bitburger LandGang Am Dreeskopf is a 2.7-kilometre circular hiking trail around Neidenbach. The stated distances are similar; the type of route is also useful for comparison. This is a loop around Neidenbach, while the other is a nature trail through the Heilenbach Valley, running from St. Thomas via the monastery to the waterfalls. The routes therefore differ not only in length, but also in their course and named destinations.

Shopping and Refreshments

The Neidenbach village shop offers fresh products from its bakery and butcher counters, as well as other everyday essentials. It also serves as a stop for refreshments for hikers and cyclists. If you plan to shop or get refreshments there, check the current opening hours in advance.
