The rocky forest, a Roman villa, a castle and a Neoclassical church give Bollendorf a varied character. When planning a stay, you can first decide whether the landscape or the town’s architectural and cultural history should shape your itinerary. Alongside the sandstone formations, buildings and traces from different eras take centre stage.

Rocky Forest and Hiking Options

The Grüne-Hölle-Tour follows narrow paths through the rocky forest of Bollendorf and past unusual sandstone formations. The Bollendorf Fairy-Tale Trail is a fairy-tale hike through Bollendorf’s rocky forest. The Grüne-Hölle-Tour focuses specifically on paths and sandstone, while the fairy-tale hike is at the heart of the Fairy-Tale Trail. If you plan to take the trail, check the latest route information in advance.

The Bollendorf audio tour app offers the “Grüne Hölle” and “Manfreds Felsentour” audio tours. Check whether the app is available before your trip. The two tours offer another way to explore Bollendorf-related themes and complement the hiking options with an audio component.

Roman Traces at Villa Bollendorf

The Roman Villa Bollendorf was inhabited from the 2nd century until the end of the 4th century. Remains of the underfloor heating system, the hypocaust, are still visible at the villa. On the entrance side facing the valley, a colonnade stood between two corner towers. A bathing area was later added west of the colonnade, with a hot room (caldarium), a warm bath (tepidarium) and a cold bath (frigidarium). The different rooms and structural elements give this Roman residence a tangible architectural form. In 1997, a modern protective structure was built over the villa through the efforts of the Bollendorf branch of the Eifel Association.

Castle and Church: Different Building Phases

Bollendorf Castle acquired its present appearance in the Baroque period, when Abbot Gregorius Schouppe had it extensively remodelled in the 18th century. The circular wall and remains of the tower survive from the medieval predecessor complex. This earlier complex is thought to have been built on Roman remains. The castle thus brings together a Baroque remodelling and surviving parts of a medieval complex, while the theory about its origins on Roman remains remains uncertain.

The parish church of St. Michael in Bollendorf was built in 1838/39 to plans by Johann Georg Wolff, then Trier’s municipal architect. It is a Neoclassical hall church with an altar framed by columns and an attached tower. In contrast to the castle’s Baroque character, the church represents a different building phase: the dates distinguish the castle’s extensive remodelling in the 18th century from the church’s construction in the 19th century.
