Echtershausen is part of the South Eifel Nature Park and lies on the northwestern arm of a reservoir, on the right bank of the Prüm. The landscape and hiking shape a stay here, as do the historical traces in the village. When planning, it is worth distinguishing between the options: one route circles Echtershausen, while two others start here and lead to different destinations over specifically stated distances.

Hiking through forest, village and by the reservoir

The Stausee-Prümtalroute circles Echtershausen and passes through the light, and in places also dense, Eifel forest. Stage 4 of the Eifelverein-Willibrordus-Weg runs from Echtershausen to Oberweis and covers 15.5 kilometres. The Stauseeroute Biersdorf follows the Willibrordus-Weg from Echtershausen via Ringelstein, then descends to the Bitburger Stausee after 3.7 kilometres. The routes therefore offer different points of reference: the loop around Echtershausen, the stage to Oberweis and the descent to the lake. Destinations and distances help you compare the options for your own hike.

Swimming, diving and fishing are not permitted at the Bitburger Stausee. Bear this restriction in mind if you plan to make the lake a destination on the Stauseeroute Biersdorf. For getting around the wider area, the K 71 district road connects Echtershausen southwards with Bitburg via Hamm and Biersdorf am See.

Architecture and historical traces

The list of protected monuments, as of 24 June 2024, includes the Catholic St. Mary’s Chapel at Hauptstraße 12, a rendered building with a roof turret dating from 1892 and a later sacristy extension. The transverse farmhouse at Hauptstraße 6 is also listed. It dates from the first half of the 19th century; its forge extension is somewhat newer. For both buildings, the entries record a later addition as well as the date of construction.

A slate rock in the village centre marks the Prüm’s former western course around the village. The list of protected monuments also names two wayside crosses: one west of the sunken-lane junction leading into the village, dated 1778, and one at the eastern edge of the forest by the stream that marks Echtershausen’s western boundary. The latter dates from 1770; its finial cross is newer. Together, the dates of the crosses and the construction dates of the farmhouse and chapel trace a sequence from the late 18th to the 19th century.

Cultural attractions in the Eifelkreis Bitburg-Prüm

The Eifelkreis Bitburg-Prüm offers other distinct cultural and historical attractions to choose from. The Mühlenberger Stollen Bleialf visitor mine has a mining trail with numerous information panels on the area’s mining history. During a one-hour guided tour of the mine, visitors learn about ore mining in Bleialf, from geology to practical technology. Check the seasonal opening information before your visit.

The Devonium in Waxweiler presents complex concepts in palaeontology and the science of fossil life in an engaging way. The Westwallmuseum in Irrel is housed across three accessible floors of a bunker; its underground corridors and rooms contain a military history exhibition. In Rittersdorf, a water castle around 700 years old has been preserved almost unchanged since its construction and offers a picture of late medieval and modern Renaissance residential culture. The castle also has a privately run restaurant serving fine country cuisine. Check whether the restaurant is open before visiting.
