Burbach lies on the boundary between the northern edge of the Kyllburger Waldeifel and the Islek. The landscape and local history offer a range of ways to enjoy a stay: walks through the surrounding countryside, a parish church with a long building history, and numerous dated shrines and crosses.

Landscape and activities

The Truffvenn nature reserve lies northeast of Burbach. The 6.4-hectare area was placed under protection in 1986. It is a specifically designated protected area in the landscape around the village, while Burbach’s location on the boundary between the Kyllburger Waldeifel and the Islek provides the broader landscape setting.

Activities in Burbach include walks along well-maintained paths through the surrounding countryside, fishing and a visit to the Lietzenhof golf course. These options offer different ways to spend your time: alongside walks in nature, fishing and a visit to the golf course are also available. You can choose the kind of activity that interests you for your stay.

Church, local history and historic houses

The parish church of St. Margaret dates back to a chapel built in 1756 and was substantially extended in 1950. A shrine dated 1812 stands in the churchyard. Another shrine, from 1718, is located near Hillstraße 17. The two shrines can be distinguished by their different dates and locations.

The history of rural architecture can also be seen in two named houses. At Heldstraße 6 stands a single-storey under-stall house with a field kitchen, dated 1824. The hallway-kitchen house at Talstraße 3 dates from 1778 and received an extension in the early 20th century. The details therefore distinguish both the house types and their chronology: the later extension is explicitly part of the building history of the hallway-kitchen house, while the under-stall house is described as single-storey and having a field kitchen.

The historical form of the name “Boirbach” is recorded for 1570. One local interpretation understands the name Burbach to mean “house by the stream.” The recorded form of the name and this interpretation offer two different ways into the village’s history: an earlier name and a possible meaning of the name.

Wayside crosses and pilgrimage connections

Several crosses can be clearly distinguished by their dates and individual locations. Their settings range from roads and junctions to the Pilgrim Way in the Kyllwald:

  • A niche cross from 1658 stands on the road from Burbach to Balesfeld, near the municipal boundary.
  • A niche cross from 1727 is located northeast of Burbach on the old Hochstraße towards Seffern.
  • Another niche cross, dated 1605, stands at the junction with the former route from Burbach to Balesfeld.
  • About 500 metres south of the other crosses, a beam cross from 1790 stands on the old Hochstraße towards Seffern.
  • A shaft cross from 1822 is located west of Burbach at the junction of the Neustraßburg–Nimshuscheid and Burbach–Wawern roads.

The Köhler Cross is a small late-Baroque beam cross in the Kyllwald, on the Pilgrim Way between Neuheilenbach and Weißenseifen. It is dated 1776 and is associated with the Pilgrim Way from the Northern Eifel to the Abbey of St. Matthias in Trier. It stands near a hunting lodge, about ten metres from the path. The date, location and pilgrimage connection together give a clear picture of this particular place.
