In Jucken, hiking and village history go hand in hand: Nature Park Südeifel Hiking Trail No. 14 starts and ends here, alongside historic buildings and local customs.

Circular Trail No. 14: Watercourses and Distant Views

The circular trail follows the Judesbach, the Irsen and the Wurmichtbach. A section along a ridge opens up panoramic views across the Islek. The Irsental, viewpoints and distant vistas are also among the route’s highlights. The watercourses and the section at higher elevation offer contrasting features within the same loop. If you enjoy both waterways and wide-open views when hiking, this trail offers both on one circular route.

Building Heritage and Village History

The Rhineland-Palatinate register of listed monuments, as of 24 June 2024, describes the Catholic branch church of St. Valentin as a Baroque-inspired hall church dating from 1930/31; its stained-glass windows are by H. Maier. The protected residential section of a transverse farmhouse at Hauptstraße 17 dates from 1789 and is considered a defining feature of the village. A listed residential building at Kapellenstraße 16 is dated to the first half to the middle of the 18th century and was extended in the second half of the 19th century. The property at Kapellenstraße 16 also includes a single-storey bakery with a forge dating from 1875. The construction dates mark different eras—from the 18th-century house and the 1875 bakery to the church of 1930/31.

Records kept by the ecclesiastical tithe lords of Vianden mention Jucken in 1640 as a village near Olmscheid. Local customs also offer a glimpse of different occasions throughout the year. The May festival includes cutting, decorating and raising the maypole, followed by singing beneath it. At Epiphany, children go from house to house as part of the Sternsinger tradition, marking doors with C+M+B. Since generations ago, children and parents have gathered after Carnival to symbolically burn winter.
