Daleiden is located in the Islek region, 6.6 km from the Luxembourg border, and is a state-recognised health resort. Three distinct themes shape a stay here: a moderately difficult circular hiking trail, a war cemetery with lists of names, and a nature reserve whose conservation purpose also includes fossil-bearing sediment layers. This lets you decide before your trip whether hiking, remembrance or natural history should take centre stage.

Remembrance and local events

With more than 3,000 people killed in the Second World War buried there, the war cemetery in Daleiden is the largest military cemetery of honour in Rhineland-Palatinate. At the entrance, visitors can consult the lists of names of the fallen, among other things, in the information building. If you are planning your visit around particular names, these lists can provide a specific focus. Check in advance whether the information building is open to visitors.

Daleiden also hosts a traditional Christmas market that is popular with locals and visitors. If the market is a deciding factor for your travel dates, check the dates in advance.

Hiking with different points of interest

The South Eifel Nature Park Hiking Trail No. 03 in Daleiden is a moderately difficult 14.1 km circular route. It follows the Heimbach and Mühlbach streams and runs through woodland for much of its length. Its length and level of difficulty provide a clear basis for planning; the information about the streams and woodland sections describes the route’s landscape. The route can be travelled using a Swiss-Trac wheelchair power assist. If you need one, check its availability before your trip.

Another option is the accessible Comfort Path Daleiden. Along the path, an information board with legends and illustrations tells visitors about the Willibrord Fountain, named after Saint Willibrord. Here, the focus is on one specific site with explanatory information, while Hiking Trail No. 03 is characterised by its length and circular route.

Nature conservation and natural history

The “Ginsterheiden im Irsental bei Daleiden” nature reserve covers 76 ha and lies within the cadastral districts of Daleiden, Irrhausen and Olmscheid. Its conservation purpose includes preserving fossil-bearing sediment layers for scientific and natural-history reasons. So the significance of this area is not just a matter of its size: protecting the geological layers is also part of its natural-history importance. This distinguishes it from the hiking route, which is defined by its length, difficulty and course.

More places to explore in the Eifelkreis Bitburg-PrĂĽm district

The Eifelkreis Bitburg-PrĂĽm district has other destinations with distinct themes. The Devonium in Waxweiler presents complex concepts in palaeontology and the science of fossil life in an engaging way. The Westwall Museum is housed on three accessible floors of a bunker and features a military-history exhibition in underground corridors and rooms. At the MĂĽhlenberger Stollen Bleialf visitor mine, one-hour guided tours offer insights into ore mining in Bleialf, from geology to applied technology.

These destinations each focus on something different: fossil life at the Devonium, military history in the bunker, and mining in the tunnel. At the MĂĽhlenberger Stollen, the one-hour guided tour also gives you a specific timeframe to plan around. This lets you choose additional topics based on the kind of history or science that interests you most.
