A sculpture park where new artworks are continually added to a natural setting shapes the cultural profile of Wartenberg-Rohrbach. The meadows adjoining the mill at Schlossberg were transformed into a sculpture park in 2006. Since then, more artworks have been added. Art and landscape are connected here, and the collection continues to grow. If you would like to experience the park in person, check visiting options in advance.

Church and Pilgrimage Route

The Protestant Church of Wartenberg-Rohrbach stands above the district of Rohrbach and is clearly visible from afar. A chapel built in Rohrbach in the 12th or 13th century can still be seen in the rear section of the church. Old frescoes were uncovered and restored in the church in 1968. Their subjects include scenes from the Old Testament; some of the frescoes are among the oldest examples in the Palatinate. One of the two bells dates from 1515. The chapel, wall paintings, and bell point to different historical periods and give the church several historical points of reference. The Way of St. James passes the church in Rohrbach and connects this church location with the theme of pilgrimage.

More Excursions in the Donnersberg District

In the wider travel destination of the Donnersberg district, hiking and mining themes offer additional options for trip planning alongside local art and church history. The Donnersberg is 687 meters high, making it the highest elevation in the Palatinate. It covers about 2,400 hectares, is almost entirely forested, and extends diagonally for up to 7.5 kilometers. These figures give an idea of the scale of the regional landscape.

Two circular hiking trails in the Donnersberg district can be distinguished by their length and destination. The Ludwigsturm circular trail is 6.7 kilometers long, starts at Haus Linn in Dannenfels, and leads to the Ludwig Tower, which is currently closed for renovation work. The Wildenstein Castle Ruins circular trail is 7.9 kilometers long and leads to the ruins of Wildenstein Castle. This makes it 1.2 kilometers longer. Another difference is the destination: the tower and castle ruins are the focus of these separate hiking routes.

A mountain biking singletrack in the forest near Sippersfeld also offers a different way to choose a route. It features root sections and chunks of red sandstone, which can be ridden along either a more challenging or a gentler line. The two described lines help you assess the physical challenge of this route without overlooking the obstacles mentioned in the route description.

For mining history, the Donnersberg district offers another area of focus. The Weiße Grube visitor mine presents traces of 600 years of mining in an extensive system of tunnels. These include medieval mining areas as well as later workings excavated with explosives. The Palatinate Mining Museum in Imsbach explains the region’s ores, rocks, and fossil fuels, as well as the extraction and processing of iron, manganese, copper, cobalt, gold, silver, and mercury. The mining theme thus complements art and church history with a distinct perspective on raw materials and their processing.
