Oberndorf lies in the Alsenz Valley and is a municipality in the Donnersberg district of Rhineland-Palatinate. The village combines a distinctive history of church construction with opportunities to experience the North Palatinate landscape on foot or by bike. The St. Valentin Simultaneous Church, the Alsenz Valley Cycle Route that runs through Oberndorf, and the network of country lanes around the village each offer a different focus. When planning a stay, visitors can therefore choose between architectural history, a signposted cycle route and walks in the surrounding area.

Church Architecture and Village Character

The St. Valentin Simultaneous Church was first documented as a fortified church in 1128. It is a late Gothic, east-facing, single-nave building made of unplastered rubble stone. The church tower has a pyramidal roof and sound arcades dating from the 13th century. Inside is an elaborate cycle of late Gothic frescoes. These features offer several points of interest for visitors interested in cultural history: the early mention of the church as a fortified church, its architectural form and its paintings each reveal a different aspect of the building’s history. The church is open during services. Access arrangements may vary; check them locally before your visit. Renovated civic houses also contribute to the village character.

Cycling and Walking

The signposted Alsenz Valley Cycle Route runs through Oberndorf on its way from Rockenhausen to Alsenz. The St. Valentin Simultaneous Church is visible from a distance along the route; this view provides a landmark for route planning. The village fountain on the central square offers a place to rest for walkers and cyclists using the Alsenz Valley Cycle Route. On the route, a view into the Alsenz Valley comes after the final climb. When cycling, take current trail conditions into account.

A well-developed network of country lanes around Oberndorf makes it easy to walk through the North Palatinate landscape. This offers two different ways to get around: a signposted cycle connection through the village or walking paths in the surrounding area. There is also a Kneipp barefoot path on the Alsenz Valley Cycle Route. Check the condition of the facility before visiting.

Carnival and Wine-Growing Area

The village’s character also has cultural and wine-growing associations. Oberndorf is regionally known for North Palatinate carnival, which is associated with the Oberndorfer Carneval Club. Carnival events are seasonal; if you are planning a trip for them, check the specific dates. The Oberndorfer Aspenberg adds to the local profile as a wine-growing area known for good quality.
