Obermoschel combines a historic old town with traces of its mining past and routes through the vineyards. During your stay, you can focus on historic buildings, wine-growing traditions, or hiking and cycling routes. Choose from the different themes to suit your schedule.

Old Town and Mining History

A walk through the old town takes you past carefully restored historic buildings that bear witness to the town’s development. The town hall was built around 1510. Petersturm is the only surviving tower of the town wall; it is dated to the 14th or 15th century. Schuck’s House, a notable Renaissance building, is another landmark. Next to the town hall is the Ratskeller, described as the town’s oldest inn. The Polish Court is also worth seeing: its foundation stone was laid by the steward of Landsberg Castle.

Mining is also part of Obermoschel’s history. For centuries, cinnabar mining for mercury smelting shaped the town; historic silver mining is also documented. Attractions include mercury mines, which are considered the discovery site of the minerals Moschellandsbergite and Moschelite. The North Palatinate Radio Museum is located in the market square. Another special attraction is the model railway in the beer hall of the former Vetter Brewery, which covers more than 150 square metres.

Wine Trail and Routes

Wine-growing has deep roots in Obermoschel. The vines grow mainly on steep slopes that are difficult to cultivate, on volcanic slate soils that contribute to the wines’ distinctive character. The wine trail on Seelberg leads from Obermoschel into the vineyards above Niedermoschel and back again. Along the way, the route passes right by the historic vineyard hut, which stands above the town in a scenic location. Information boards explain the age and origins of various wine varieties. The trail combines exercise with insights into wine-growing and the landscape, without requiring a specific route length or walking time.

Sports and leisure options also include the Geo-Cultural Trail, the Wind Trail, an extensive network of hiking paths and cycling routes. The Palatinate Heights Trail is a long-distance hiking route that passes through Obermoschel; the old town is listed as a stage destination. On a cycling tour, the “Alte Welt around Rockenhausen” route reaches Obermoschel via the Moscheltal Cycle Route. It runs, among other places, through Waldgrehweiler, Finkenbach-Gersweiler, Schiersfeld and Sitters. Check current conditions and route signs before setting out.
