A local network of hiking trails, the garden railway and several historic sites shape Börrstadt’s appeal to visitors in different ways. You can plan your stay around what interests you most: nature and scenery, the miniature world of model railways, or the history of a chapel and a hermitage.

Hiking Trails and Watercourses in Börrstadt

Börrstadt is part of the local network of hiking trails. The Pfrimm runs along the eastern edge of the municipal area, while the Grundheckerbach flows through the settlement. Their different locations within the area make it easy to distinguish the two waterways.

The Börrstadt Garden Railway

The Börrstadt Garden Railway is a model railway built to a scale of 1:5, on which passengers can ride. The grounds feature a station, a signal box, a tunnel, a bridge and a level crossing. The locomotives were built based on faithful reproductions of original prototypes. The attraction thus combines a ride with a railway site laid out in intricate detail.

Cultural Sites with Distinctive Features

The hermitage can be reached on foot from Hahnweilerhof in about 15 minutes and lies west of the farmstead. As trail conditions can vary, the walking time should be treated as an approximate guide. The hermitage probably existed before 1468. It is classified as a legally protected cultural monument in Rhineland-Palatinate; the monument designation is dated April 2024.

The Maria-Hilf Chapel also has a clearly defined setting: it stands on Petersberg in the upper Kirchtal valley, west of Börrstadt, and is surrounded by mixed woodland. St. Nikolaus, the village church, is just under 230 years old. In Börrstadt, a historic hermitage, a chapel in a woodland setting and an old village church thus stand side by side as distinct cultural points of interest.

In the broader Donnersbergkreis destination

For excursions in the broader Donnersbergkreis destination, the Donnersberg offers a landscape setting of its own. It is 687 metres high and the highest elevation in the Palatinate. The Donnersberg covers about 2,400 hectares, is almost entirely forested and stretches diagonally for up to 7.5 kilometres. In the Donnersberger Land, scenic hikes wind through varied landscapes and woodland.

Two circular hiking trails can be compared by length. The Ludwigsturm circular trail starts at Haus Linn in Dannenfels, is 6.7 kilometres long and leads to Ludwigsturm. The Ruine Wildenstein circular trail leads to the ruins and is 7.9 kilometres long. This makes it 1.2 kilometres longer than the trail to Ludwigsturm.

The Donnersbergkreis also has other points of interest in its cultural history. Falkenstein Castle Ruins stand on an extinct volcanic vent and were first mentioned in a document in 1135. The Celtic Ring Wall consists of the buried remains of a wall about 8.5 kilometres long, which enclosed a Celtic oppidum on the Donnersberg from about 130 to 60/50 BC.

The Weiße Grube visitor mine showcases traces of 600 years of mining. The extensive tunnel system includes medieval mining areas and later workings excavated using explosives. The Palatinate Mining Museum in Imsbach explains the region’s ores, rocks and fossil fuels, as well as the extraction and processing of iron, manganese, copper, cobalt, gold, silver and mercury.
