Geierlay spans the valley between Sosberg and Mörsdorf: it is 360 metres long and 100 metres high. Sosberg also offers several nearby hiking trails, a viewpoint on the path to the bridge, and a church with a long history. This lets you plan your visit around your interests, focusing on the suspension bridge, a hike or the historic village.

Geierlay: dimensions, access and rules

The suspension bridge can be crossed in either direction and opened on 3 October 2015. Sosberg has a designated hikers’ car park at Hauptstraße 28. It offers toilet facilities and charging stations for electric vehicles. From this car park, a footpath of approximately 1.5 kilometres leads to the bridge; it is not possible to drive directly to Geierlay. Be sure to allow time for the walk when planning your visit.

Bicycles are allowed on the bridge, but must be pushed across. A narrow pushchair can be taken onto the bridge, and dogs must be kept on a leash. Visitor rules may change, so check them before your trip. In Mörsdorf, a visitor centre dedicated to the planning and construction of Geierlay also includes a museum café. Alongside crossing the bridge, you can learn about how it came to be.

Hiking trails and viewpoints near Sosberg

Several nearby hiking trails can be reached from Sosberg. These include the Masdascher Burgherrenweg, a connection to the Saar-HunsrĂĽck-Steig, the Geierlay loop, and the premium loop trails Altlayer-Schweiz and Layensteig Strimmiger Berg. Their different names give you several specific options to consider when planning your hiking day, without assuming that they all follow the same route. In the wider HunsrĂĽck region, the Saar-HunsrĂĽck-Steig is connected to 111 Traumschleifen trails for full- and half-day hikes.

The Riesenbank (Giant Bench) lies on the path between the visitor car park and Geierlay. It is made of Douglas fir sourced from the surrounding area and offers views towards the Eifel and the bridge anchorage. The bench is intended as a place to rest, picnic and take photos. It is one of the convenient stopping points on the way to the bridge, rather than a separate attraction.

The route from Mörsdorf to Geierlay has its own focus, too: information boards along the way cover renewable energy and climate protection. If you are interested in the bridge’s history, the visitor centre in Mörsdorf has information about its planning and construction, as well as a museum café.

Local history and coat of arms

The Catholic Church of St Matthias in Sosberg was built in 1769. The village was first mentioned in historical records in 1330 under the name “Soysbergh”. Until 1781, Sosberg was a “Dreiherrisches Territorium” (a territory ruled by three lords). These dates mark different stages in the village’s history: its first recorded mention, its later territorial status and the construction of the church.

The coat of arms also brings together several historical references. The red-and-silver chequerboard pattern represents the Hintere Grafschaft Sponheim. A red cross on silver recalls the Electorate of Trier; the silver hunting horn refers to the Lordship of Beilstein. The silver halberd relates to St Matthias, the patron saint of the church. The green central field represents the municipality’s agricultural character. In this way, the individual symbols can be linked to different regional and local references.

The name Geierlay, in turn, goes back to an older field name: it derives from “Geierslay”, with “Ley” meaning rock or cliff. The bridge’s design also has a connection of its own: Nepalese suspension bridges served as a model for its construction. In Sosberg, you can discover both the village’s history and the story behind the construction of the famous bridge.
