Altlay lies in a side valley of the Moselle. The village’s history is closely linked to slate and ore mining, while forest trails and rocky sections reveal another side of the landscape. You can choose from different focuses when planning your trip: the parish church and older buildings, a walk around the village, or hikes on the Altlayer Schweiz Dream Loop and the Saar-Hunsrück-Steig. This makes it possible to discover Altlay through both its history and its forest and rocky landscapes.

Church and Mining History

St. Barbara’s Parish Church was built in 1771 on the site of an older chapel. It served as a simultaneous church until 1809. These dates describe two distinct historical points: 1771 is the year the present-day church was built, and 1809 marks the end of its use as a simultaneous church. A walk around the village can include the church as a stop, bringing a specific building into your exploration of the village.

Altlay developed as a settlement of slate miners. The historic mines produced silver, copper, lead, zinc, and pyrite; mining in the Altlayer Bachtal continued until 1959. These key facts show that slate and ore mining together shaped the village’s history: the settlement’s development is linked to the miners, while the list of ores shows the variety of raw materials extracted. The Gästehaus Nils Müller is also considered one of Altlay’s oldest houses and can be included on a walk around the village. If you would like to take a closer look at the building, check current visitor access beforehand.

Hiking Between Forest and Slate

The Altlayer Schweiz Dream Loop is an approximately 8.5-kilometer circular hiking route. It passes through extensive HunsrĂĽck forests with sharp-edged slate rocks and rocky sections. The route also includes winding forest paths, stream valleys, and views across the deeply incised Hitzelbach Valley. Its approximate length helps you gauge the extent of the circular route, while its forest, rocky, and valley sections give it a distinct landscape profile. If you are looking for more of a stroll, the forests around Altlay also offer opportunities for relaxing walks.

Altlay on the Saar-HunsrĂĽck-Steig

Altlay is also a stop on the 410-kilometer Saar-Hunsrück-Steig. Stage 17 runs from Sohren via Hahn to Altlay, and a plateau along this stage offers sweeping views across the Hunsrück as far as the Moselle Valley. The 410 kilometers refer to the long-distance trail as a whole; Stage 17 specifically identifies Altlay as its destination, while the Dream Loop is a single circular hike of approximately 8.5 kilometers. Another regional route connection is the Altlay–Blankenrath section: it is one of two stages directly connected to Blankenrath.

About 65 percent of the Saar-HunsrĂĽck-Steig runs over soft forest soil, meadow paths, or along streams. After prolonged rain, some sections of the trail can be difficult to walk, so sturdy footwear is recommended. Check current trail conditions before setting out, especially after prolonged rainfall. This gives you a practical distinction when choosing: the village walk focuses on local history, the Altlayer Schweiz offers a circular route with a stated distance, and the Saar-HunsrĂĽck-Steig connects Altlay to a long-distance hiking stage.
