Urschmitt is a rural village shaped by agriculture, situated on the Eifel Heights. Its history stretches from its medieval ties to Stuben Abbey to precisely datable milestones in the building history of the parish church. When planning your trip, two practical questions arise: Which bus connections suit the day of the week, and what kind of hiking or cultural route are you looking for?

Village Character and History

Urschmitt extends across relatively flat terrain east of the Blinzberg. The Blinzberg is recorded as standing 430 meters above sea level. Both its location on the Eifel Heights and the relatively flat terrain east of the Blinzberg shape the village’s appearance.

The parish church is dedicated to Saint Quirinus. Its Romanesque west tower dates from a renovation in 1217; the church was consecrated in 1909. A bell also bears a precise date: it was cast in 1395. Stuben Abbey is another historical connection. The abbey owned a chapel in the village from 1190 and maintained this connection until 1807. The church and chapel thus represent different aspects of local history: building and church history on the one hand, and the relationship with an abbey on the other.

Plan Bus Connections by Day of the Week

Route 716 connects Urschmitt with Lutzerath and Alflen. It runs hourly; on weekends, service runs every two hours. A transfer provides a connection to Route 700 between Cochem and Ulmen. On school days, Route 706 also runs from Urschmitt via Gevenich to Cochem and later from Urschmitt to Lutzerath. The routes therefore serve different planning needs: the weekend schedule matters for Route 716, while Route 706 operates on school days. Check the timetables again before travelling.

Comparing Hiking and Cultural Routes

The HeimatSpur Waterfall Experience Route is a challenging circular hike starting and ending in Bad Bertrich. It is 13.3 kilometers long and includes 474 meters of ascent and descent. It took first place in the “Germany’s Most Beautiful Hiking Trail” competition in 2023. If you plan to hike this route, check the route details before setting out.

The “Calmont–Stuben Abbey–Petersberg” Cultural Circular Route offers a different kind of outing: it links the Moselle loop, a late-antique fortification on Petersberg, the ruins of the former Stuben Abbey church and the Calmont via ferrata. The 7-to-9-kilometer circular route is estimated to take around 2 to 4 hours. The Calmont via ferrata between Eller and Bremm runs through vineyards 200 to 300 meters above the Moselle, which are considered among the steepest in Europe. The route includes challenges of an alpine nature. Steel cables, ladders, footholds and steps secure the path; the hike takes approximately three hours. The estimated times for the cultural circular route and via ferrata are therefore similar, while their lengths and character differ. Check the weather and safety conditions before using the via ferrata.

The Kliding Waterfall offers another distinct attraction: it drops approximately 28 meters and is considered the highest waterfall in the Eifel. The path there requires sure footing, as the trails are narrow and wind close to the waterfall. This is an important difference to consider when choosing this hike compared with the route profiles described above.

Thermal Water in Bad Bertrich

For a different kind of stay, there is the Vulkaneifel Therme in Bad Bertrich. Its key features include thermal water from Germany’s only Glauber’s salt thermal spa, five experience saunas and wellness treatments. As the facilities on offer may change, check the current options before visiting.
