If you are considering Roes as a place to stay, you can shape your trip around two different interests: cultural history centered on Pyrmont Castle and the Swan Church, or hiking trails that differ in their starting points, stated distances and landscapes. The Swan Church is also the starting point of a signposted circular route; other trails focus on rock formations, scenic views or a route connecting several places.

Pyrmont Castle: History and guest rooms

Pyrmont Castle was first mentioned in 1225. Its keep is more than 800 years old; between 1963 and 1967, architects Hentrich and Petschnigg rebuilt the castle. Medieval history and a 20th-century reconstruction therefore stand side by side. The castle grounds opened to visitors in 1990 and can also be used for civil wedding ceremonies and celebrations. Pyrmont Castle also offers wedding receptions and guest rooms for overnight stays. Before your trip, check whether access, use of the venue and guest rooms are suitable for your dates. For comparison: the medieval Imperial Castle of Cochem, in the wider Cochem-Zell travel region, was restored and rebuilt in the neo-Gothic style by Louis Ravené in the 19th century.

The Swan Church and circular trail

The Swan Church near Roes is a pilgrimage church dedicated to Saint Mary. It was built around 1473, destroyed in 1944 and rebuilt around 1950. Light can illuminate the interior in colorful tones through its windows. As the starting point of the signposted Eifelhöhen and Brohlbachtal circular trail, the church also serves as a clear landmark for a day of hiking. Parts of the trail follow shaded woodland paths along the Brohlbach. Check the trail markers and access before setting out.

Hiking trails with different highlights

The Pyrmonter Felsensteig trail combines steep rock faces, expansive fields and far-reaching views. It passes the rock formations of the Teufelskammer; the section at Sammetzkopf offers panoramic views across the region. The 13 km Kulm Route connects Roes, Brachtendorf, Gamlen and Kaifenheim. This gives you different points of reference to choose from: the Kulm Route has a clearly stated distance and sequence of settlements; the Eifelhöhen and Brohlbachtal circular trail starts at the church and includes partly shaded woodland paths; and the Felsensteig features rock formations and panoramic views. Choose according to which of these specific features matter to you for your day of hiking.
