The “Nature and Energy” wind trail (K5) is an approximately five-kilometre hiking route in the Lieger Wald wind farm and is suitable for families with strollers. Four information boards cover wind energy; one board, designed for children, explains how a wind turbine works. If you plan to stop at the information stations, check the current signs on site.
Hiking trails with different profiles
In Lieg, trails lead through forests, meadows and fields. They vary in length and difficulty, so you can choose a route to match the profile you want. Information about individual routes is more helpful than a general assessment of the trail network.
The Lei Path is a short link from the K1 circular trail, but has steep slopes, wooden footbridges and changing surfaces. Its short length alone therefore says little about the character of the route: take the slopes and surfaces into account when planning.
The K3 circular trail crosses meadows and fields, passes through woodland and descends into the DĂĽnnbachtal before returning to Lieg. Along the way, it passes four former silver mines. They are protected because they serve as shelter for bats; do not enter the mines. K3 thus combines different landscapes with a specific nature conservation topic.
Cycling route and chapels
A cycling route also passes through Lieg: the 30-kilometre Hunsrück-Mosel Cycle Route connects Treis-Karden and Kastellaun. Check the current route signs before setting off. The Seläcker Heiligenhäuschen, a chapel dedicated to St Joseph between Lieg and Lahr, stands beside the Hunsrück–Mosel Cycle Route.
Church and local history
St Goar’s parish church was built without a tower in 1764. Inside, there is an elaborately designed altar with a revolving tabernacle, as well as an organ whose stops are controlled by foot pedals. These details give the church interior a distinctive character, beyond what the simple construction date alone can convey about its furnishings.
The chapels also reflect different periods of construction. The Wendelinus Chapel at the entrance to the village was rebuilt in 1908 on the site of an earlier chapel. The Chapel of Our Lady of Sorrows, built in 1880, is also at the village entrance. The Seläcker Heiligenhäuschen adds another chapel between Lieg and Lahr.
An excavated Roman settlement near Lieg yielded Roman pottery, tools and coins. It served as a way station on the ancient Roman road between Treis-Karden and Kastellaun. The Roman archaeological site and the later churches and chapels offer different points of interest for a culturally themed stay.
Harvest festival and art
The traditional harvest festival takes place every two years. Its procession includes more than 60 groups, as well as floats and music bands. If you would like to plan your trip around it, confirm the date of the next festival in advance.
A local art gallery displays works by an artist couple and offers painting classes. If you would like to include a visit or a class in your plans, check visiting arrangements and dates in advance.
There are several themes to choose from when planning activities: the wind trail and its information boards, paths of varying lengths and difficulty, the cycling route, and churches, chapels and Roman history. This allows you to choose Lieg based on the themes you want to shape your stay.
