Altrich lies between the Eifel and the Moselle. Notable features include St. Andrew’s Church, built in 1873; the Old Oak, which is at least 300 years old; and the A1 circular trail. The village therefore offers specific points of interest for two pursuits: architectural and local history, and walks through the countryside. There is also a dedicated cycling option and regional produce sold directly by the producer.

Churches and historical landmarks

St. Andrew’s Parish Church is a five-bay, Gothic Revival hall church dating from 1873, with an outdoor stone altar. In Büscheid stands the Church of St. Quirinus, also Gothic Revival in style but with three bays, dating from the late 19th century. The comparison is specific: an exact year is known for St. Andrew’s, while St. Quirinus is dated more broadly; the number of bays in each church also marks an architectural difference.

Another historical landmark is Gut Kirchhof, a former electoral estate. Its entry also includes a wayside shrine depicting the Crucifixion, dated 1714. A chapel near Hof Haardt, southwest of Altrich, is a rendered building whose origins are thought to date to around 1720. The chapel’s date is an estimate; 1714 is the year given for the wayside shrine. Together, these landmarks represent different historical reference points, and their dates are not all equally precise.

On foot along the A1 circular trail

The Altrich circular trail (A1) starts at the bus stop on Andreasstraße in the village center and can be walked in either direction. The route passes the Old Oak and, before reaching Altrich’s district of Büscheid, passes wayside crosses. This village trail therefore leads from its starting point in the center to named cultural and natural landmarks. The Old Oak is at least 300 years old and has been protected as a natural monument since 1938: its minimum age and the year it received protection refer to two different points in time. Trail access details may change; check the latest information before setting out.

Cycling routes and regional produce

For cyclists, the Wallfahrts-Schleife route loops around Altrich through the Wittlich Depression. This offers two different kinds of route: the A1, a circular hiking trail starting in the village center, and a cycling loop through the depression. Those wishing to include the long-distance Lieserpfad trail in their plans will find it very close to Altrich. The Maare-Moselle Cycle Route also runs near the village, following a former railway line from Daun to Lieser on the Moselle.

Biohof Wahsner sells regional produce directly from the producer, including organic beef, honey, apple juice and seasonal vegetables. The selection is not the same all year round: product availability may vary by season. If a particular product is important for your visit, check in advance what is available during that season.

Bernkastel-Wittlich as a wider setting

The wider destination of Bernkastel-Wittlich brings together the volcanic Eifel, the romantic Moselle Valley and the Hunsrück, with its forests and meadows. This landscape setting covers a broader area than Altrich’s own location between the Eifel and the Moselle. As a regional option for hiking and winter activities, Bernkastel-Wittlich highlights the 816-meter-high Erbeskopf, where a range of winter sports is available. The National Park Gate at Erbeskopf also provides information about nature and the environment. Its interactive multimedia exhibition covers forests and moors. These attractions are part of the wider destination, not Altrich itself.

Cultural attractions also add to the wider region: the pilgrimage church of Maria Heimsuchung in Klausen was consecrated in 1502 and remains a destination for pilgrims every year. This makes it possible to distinguish Altrich’s own mix of churches, a village walking loop, a cycling option and a natural monument from other attractions in the destination of Bernkastel-Wittlich.
