Bad Wildstein offers something for a range of travel interests: spa history, thermal facilities, hiking trails and mini golf. The mini golf course in the district is described as Germany’s oldest mini golf course. It is located between the town centre of Traben-Trarbach and the district of Bad Wildstein, and is still open to mini golf enthusiasts and those interested in history. Numerous trees grow in the picturesque Wildstein Valley, creating a pleasant atmosphere on warm summer days. The course combines a specific leisure activity with a special historical connection, without requiring you to be interested exclusively in spa history.
Spa History and Thermal Facilities
The history of the spa can also be traced through several dates. The first documented mention of a hot spring in the Kautenbach Valley dates back to 1809. Bad Wildstein’s spa history also includes a bathhouse that opened in 1883 and a new spa house that opened in 1901. The three dates highlight different aspects: 1809 marks the spring, while the later dates mark the opening of two buildings. This makes it possible to explore the subject through both its springs and its architectural history. There were 74 years between the spring’s first documented mention in 1809 and the bathhouse opening in 1883; the new spa house followed 18 years later, in 1901.
The history of the spa and thermal springs is linked to a hot spring in the Kautenbach Valley. At the Moseltherme, visitors can relax and enjoy the Traben-Trarbach rock spring. The facilities bring together a bathing area, a spacious sauna complex and a dedicated therapy department. The Moseltherme encompasses a world of water and steam covering more than 2,000 square metres. The thermal theme thus extends from the historic connection to the spring to the bathing area, sauna and therapy.
Hiking Trails with Different Features
For a walk, the 3.2 km “Elfenpfad” offers a short route in the district of Bad Wildstein. It starts at the car park behind the Moseltherme; from there, a short uphill walk leads to the trail. The 3.2 km distance refers to the Elfenpfad; allow extra time for the short uphill walk. Another hiking option is Route T 3 – Mosel Bergromantik, which passes the so-called “Red Spring” along one section before continuing to Wildbadstraße and the former Bad Wildstein spa treatment centre. Here, the named waypoints are the focus, while the Elfenpfad is described by a specific length. Trail conditions can vary; check them before your visit.
Wildstein as a Cultural Landscape Landmark
The name Wildstein also represents a cultural landscape landmark: the Kultmal Wildstein stands at approximately 289 m above sea level and is striking for its rock formations. Its approximate elevation and formations give the site a different character from the historic buildings and thermal facilities.
