A hillside bog, paths through forests and fields, and traces of Celtic and Roman times shape the opportunities for discovery in Morbach. There is also a castle ruin, a technology museum and activities for a range of interests. When planning a stay, you can choose a focus: hiking, cycling or culture can each shape your day’s itinerary.
Nature and trails around Morbach
Morbach lies in the Saar-HunsrĂĽck Nature Park and the Haardtkopf Landscape Conservation Area. South of Morbach is Ortelsbruch, a HunsrĂĽck hillside bog. The forest fitness trail there has 18 exercise stations. The forest playground features swings, slides, climbing equipment and a tree-top cable ride; it is designed as a playground for several generations. At the Nixenweiher pond, you can walk through the water in the fresh bog water. The activities offer different ways to spend your time: exercise stations, play facilities and a Kneipp-style water treatment in the bog water.
The hiking trails also vary in character. Stages 10 and 11 of the Saar-HunsrĂĽck Trail run through the Morbach holiday region. The Butzel-Kewes Trail near Morbach-Gonzerath is a family hiking trail with numerous activity stations. If you are looking for a guided themed walk, you can contact certified nature and landscape guides to arrange walks tailored to your needs. These take place by arrangement; bookings are available for groups of six or more. Check availability before your trip.
For a bike ride within the municipality, the 33-kilometre route “In the Footsteps of History” is one option; it offers several sightseeing opportunities in Morbach. The route passes through forests, fields and small villages, as well as elevated viewpoints. The Hunsrück-Nahe Cycle Route, “Across the Rugged Hunsrück Hills,” follows a different route: it reaches Morbach via Baldenau Castle Ruin and continues through the Idar Forest. For both rides, it is advisable to check signage and conditions before setting off; for the regional route, you should also allow for possible diversions.
Archaeology, castle ruins and museums
The Belginum Archaeological Park is in the Morbach-Wederath district, at the site of a Celtic-Roman settlement that was inhabited from around 400 BC to 400 AD. The archaeological finds also include a nearby excavated cemetery with more than 2,500 graves. The site offers an archaeological insight into a long period of settlement and its burial finds.
Baldenau Castle Ruin is the only moated castle in the Hunsrück and was built around 1320. The German Telephone Museum offers a different historical focus: its collection comprises more than 2,000 exhibits from two centuries and presents the history of telecommunications interactively. At Café Heimat, Edgar Reitz’s former parental home, film history and regional traditions come together. The café displays film stills, original screenplays and props; visitors can also interactively access sequences from the Heimat films. The café features selected regional products linked to local traditions and history; specific products and availability may change.
More things to do during your stay
Morbach’s heated outdoor swimming pool offers swimming, use of the diving board and beach volleyball. Opening is seasonal and conditions may vary, so check the latest information before visiting. Together with the moorland, trails and cultural sites, it offers a range of ways to spend your day, without prescribing a set order for excursions. When looking for a hotel in Morbach, it may therefore help to first consider which of these themes you would like to shape your stay.
