Veldenz brings together nature, outdoor activities, history and wine, offering different ways to enjoy a stay. The town has a wide range of hiking trails, as well as rock formations, meadows and vineyards; cycling is another activity to enjoy. Veldenz Castle above the town and the Villa Romana offer distinct historical perspectives. When planning your trip, you can choose to focus on hiking trails, cycling, cultural history or regional cuisine.
Hiking trails and scenery
The “Counts, Gold and Black Peter” cultural trail is a 47-kilometre network of circular routes connected with Veldenz and villages in the former County of Veldenz. One hike with a more specifically described character is the Graf-Georg-Johannes Trail: it runs mostly along forest paths and beside two streams. This gives you two different options: a network of circular routes and a hike with specific forest and water features.
There is parking in the village of Veldenz for the Graf-Georg-Johannes Trail; check local parking conditions before setting off. Veldenz SchulstraĂźe and Veldenz Ort are listed as the nearest or main stops for the hike. If you plan to travel by public transport, check current connections in advance.
The castle and local history
Veldenz Castle stands above the town on a steep rocky spur surrounded by forest; parts of the historic buildings have been preserved. The town’s history also includes a church bell tower dating from the 12th century, which formerly served as a defensive tower, and a tithe barn from the 15th century. These historic buildings offer a glimpse into different periods.
The Villa Romana brings together several cultural themes. It houses a small local history museum, a coin collection and changing art exhibitions. It is also home to a Roman bath complex with a preserved heating system. The villa is also a stop on the Roman Roads. While the museum and collection explore local history, the bath complex offers a glimpse of Roman architecture.
Riesling and Moselle cuisine
Riesling wines are produced in Veldenz on slate soils and in favourable climatic conditions. Viticulture is therefore a distinct part of the town’s history and landscape. You can enjoy Moselle specialties in restaurants and wine taverns. Winegrowing and regional cuisine offer different ways to make your stay a culinary experience. As individual venues and their opening arrangements may change, check current opening hours before planning a visit.
