Steep Riesling vineyards, paths along the Moselle and 23 stops on a cultural route give a stay in Piesport a range of different focuses. Depending on whether you want to hike, sample wine or explore cultural history, different details take center stage. In the wider travel destination of Bernkastel-Wittlich, the Moselle Valley, the volcanic Eifel and the Hunsrück, rich in forests and meadows, meet.

Wine Country and Tastings

Piesport has 413 hectares of vineyards and is the largest winegrowing community on the Moselle. Around 100 hectares of this area are steep slopes, where Riesling is the predominant grape variety. These area figures may change over time. Wineries offer tastings on site, at wine events, winery festivals and other local celebrations. Specific tasting opportunities and event dates may change; check them in advance if you are planning your visit around them.

Hiking Trails and Landscape

The easy Piesporter Moselbogen circular hike offers a clearly specified route: it is 7.98 kilometers long and starts and ends at the Piesport community center. The route crosses the Piesporter Goldtröpfchen vineyard and follows the banks of the Moselle. If the route changes, its length may also change. The Rund um Zimmet hike offers a different perspective on the landscape: it reaches a high terrace above the Moselle and opens up views across the Moselle Valley. The two hiking options described here therefore differ in their route details and in the view from the high terrace.

The Piesporter Heiligenhäuschen hiking parking lot is the starting point for the Piesport high-altitude trails RW1 and RW2, the Römersteig and the Moselsteig. In the Piesporter Moselbogen, the area was designated a “hotspot of biodiversity” in 2018. The steep vineyard slopes provide a habitat for many plant and animal species, including some considered rare or endangered. The range of activities associated with Piesport includes not only hiking but also Moselle cycling routes, mountain biking, water skiing, kayaking, hang gliding and boat trips along the steep vineyard slopes.

Culture and History

The Cultural Route comprises 23 stops featuring notable buildings, fountains, chapels and evidence of Roman times. Large information boards are in German, English and Dutch; smaller boards are in German and English. Three monumental ceiling paintings define the interior of St. Michael’s Church. They are known as the “Piesport Heaven.”

The Moselloreley also brings together a striking landscape feature and history: this natural monument rises almost vertically from the banks of the Moselle. Copper glance ore and galena were mined in the rock massif during the periods 1852–1872 and 1937–1939.
