Steep vineyard slopes and Roman remains give you two concrete starting points for planning a trip to Neumagen-Dhron. Museum Noviomagi and the Archaeological Trail reveal different aspects of antiquity; winegrowing, Moselsteig stages and other hiking options offer different focal points. If you are considering Neumagen-Dhron as a travel destination, these themes can help you decide which kind of stay suits your interests.

Roman Heritage at the Museum and Along the Trail

Museum Noviomagi is housed in the tourist information building. Spread across four rooms, it offers a glimpse of life in antiquity; films explain the location and dimensions of the Roman fort of Noviomagus Treverorum. A reconstructed classroom scene draws on depictions on Neumagen funerary monuments from the 2nd and 3rd centuries. The museum thus focuses both on the fort’s geographical context and on a specific scene from Roman life.

The Archaeological Trail follows the visible remains of the late-antique fort’s walls. Replicas of important reliefs discovered in Neumagen are displayed at its stops. While films in the museum explain the fort’s location and dimensions, the trail makes the course of the visible wall remains easier to follow and complements this perspective with replicas of the reliefs.

Another historical artifact is the Neumagen wine ship: it was a monumental tomb for a wealthy wine merchant from Noviomagum and dates to around 220 AD. The history of winegrowing is therefore also reflected in an ancient funerary monument.

Wine Country and Places to Eat

The vineyards are a striking feature of the landscape: half of Neumagen-Dhron’s vineyard area lies on steep or terraced slopes with an incline of more than 30 degrees. This figure makes clear that steep slopes account for a significant share of the local vineyard area.

Straußwirtschaften serve winemakers’ own wine during a limited annual period of four months; opening dates vary from one establishment to another. Wine taverns serve Moselle cuisine and Moselle wine, though participating establishments and opening hours also vary. If you are planning to visit a particular place to eat, check that establishment’s dates in advance.

Hiking and Cycling

Neumagen-Dhron is the junction of Moselsteig stages 8 and 9. Other hiking options include the Römersteig, Seitensprünge trails, themed trails, Ferienland trails and moderate hikes. For your planning, you can compare the Moselsteig connection with these other types of hikes without treating them all as a single route.

For cycling, the Mosel Cycle Route passes through the surrounding holiday region. The region is described as having a well-developed cycling network; its hills and valleys are considered suitable for mountain biking. This puts a named cycle route and an option for riding in hilly terrain side by side as distinct focal points.

Neumagen-Dhron Marina

The marina has berths for up to 80 boats measuring up to 15 metres in length. Capacity and facilities may change. If your plans depend on berth availability or specific marina facilities, check the conditions before your visit.
