Stromberg combines the history of the town with a castle-themed circular walking route. The restored Schlangenturm (Snake Tower) is part of the former town fortifications, and the Stromberg Knights’ Tour connects three castles. Stromberg is known as the town of three castles between the Hunsrück, the Rhine and the Nahe, as well as the town of the German Michel. This offers several ways to plan your trip: historic buildings, insights at the local history museum or a walk on foot.

The Stromberg Knights’ Tour on Foot

The Stromberg Knights’ Tour is a castle-themed circular route that connects three castles. The route uses storytelling and QR-code content to share information; figures for a treasure hunt are aimed at children. When choosing a route, you can compare two lengths: the family loop is 3.2 km long, and the longer circular route is 5.8 km. Both routes share the castle theme but differ in distance. You can access the route from the Stromburg hiking car park or from the town centre. This lets you consider route length and starting point as practical planning factors.

Defensive Tower and Castle History

The Schlangenturm is a restored historic defensive tower and part of Stromberg’s former town fortifications. The Alte Stromburg is a medieval castle complex dating from the 11th and 12th centuries; it was excavated by the Mainz archaeological heritage conservation authorities in the 1980s. Nearby, Burg Gollenfels is described as probably having originated in the 12th century on the foundations of an old Roman fortification. This older fortification protected a road from Mainz to Trier. The dates differ: the Alte Stromburg is dated to the 11th and 12th centuries, while the origin of Burg Gollenfels is considered probable.

Stromberg Local History Museum

The Stromberg Local History Museum presents local history in rooms arranged by theme. The exhibits include fragments from Roman excavations and medieval relics. Maps, deeds and documents from the 16th to the 20th century are also part of the exhibition. The museum also displays an almost completely preserved mosaic. The collection therefore brings together archaeological finds and medieval artefacts with written documents spanning several centuries.

Stage Route and Refreshments

The Hildegard von Bingen Pilgrimage Route is also relevant when planning your trip: Stromberg is the endpoint of one stage and the starting point of the next. If you include the route, check its course before setting out. One place to stop for refreshments is Bistro Mistral in the Panoramabad Stromberg complex. It serves German and Croatian specialties and has valley views, a terrace and indoor seating. The bistro has a separate entrance and is also open to guests who are not using the swimming pool. Before visiting, check the access arrangements, menu and seating options.

Bad Kreuznach as the Wider Context

In the wider destination of Bad Kreuznach, the Bridge Houses are among the other historic buildings to explore. They were built there from 1480 onwards due to a lack of space. The half-timbered buildings stand on the piers of the old Nahe Bridge, which was built around 1300.
