A Madonna enthroned in the high altar of Spabrücken’s church dates from the 14th century. Spabrücken is a stop on the Nahe Heights Trail; its final stage, about 24 kilometres long, begins here and leads to Bingen am Rhein. Church art and hiking routes offer different ways to shape your stay: you can explore the history of the village or choose a specific route for your hike.
Church, Pilgrimage and Monastery
The church in Spabrücken was built in the Baroque style between 1731 and 1736. Architecturally, it also draws on a Gothic predecessor dating from 1359. The pilgrimage tradition may go back a long way as well: it probably began in the 14th century and is associated with the Black Madonna of the Soon.
Alongside the enthroned Madonna in the high altar, a Pietà in a niche on the left side of the church is one of the artworks from the 14th century. Life-size wooden figures can be found at the high altar, the side altars and on the wall brackets. The rest of the furnishings were apparently created locally by Franciscans in the 18th century. The church thus brings together older figures and a Baroque building phase, while some individual furnishings also date from the 18th century.
The monastery buildings directly north of the church were built in the 1720s. Spabrücken Monastery offers retreats lasting a few days, a week or longer. The “Monastery for a Time” programme allows you to live with the small community for a week, a month or longer. These timeframes give you an initial idea of whether a shorter stay or a longer period of communal life in the monastery is a better fit for your plans. Before travelling, ask about the availability of retreats and clarify the arrangements for the “Monastery for a Time” programme.
Hikes to and from Spabrücken
Spabrücken is a stop on the Nahe Heights Trail. The final stage of the trail begins in Spabrücken and leads to Bingen am Rhein over a distance of approximately 24 kilometres. The Bad Sobernheim–Spabrücken section is listed as about 22.5 kilometres, with an approximate walking time of five hours. The two Nahe Heights Trail routes are therefore similar in length; the time estimate for the route from Bad Sobernheim to Spabrücken can help you plan your day.
Another option is the 20-kilometre Oberheimbach Pilgrim Trail to Spabrücken. It passes Kreuzkapelle, the Three Stones, Daxweiler, the Guldenbach Valley, Seibersbach, Dörrebach and Aschborner Hof. The routes mentioned differ in length and course. Check the conditions on each route before setting out; for the Oberheimbach Pilgrim Trail, you should also check access in advance.
Cultural history in the wider destination of Bad Kreuznach
The wider destination of Bad Kreuznach offers further architectural and cultural themes. In the city of Bad Kreuznach, the Bridge Houses were built from 1480 onwards because of a lack of space. These are half-timbered buildings on the pillars of the old Nahe Bridge, which was built around 1300. The museums in the city of Bad Kreuznach are located in the listed former Bangert manor house, set in a historic park; they have been housed there since 1985/86. These examples offer a distinct focus alongside Spabrücken’s monastic and pilgrimage history.
