A wine village between vineyards and forests
Oberhausen an der Nahe is known as a wine village in the Nahe Valley, between vineyards and forests. When choosing a stay, the different experiences are particularly appealing: a walk around the village, trails through protected areas, wineries and individual cultural attractions. Before looking for a holiday apartment, you can consider whether you would prefer to focus your stay on exploring the village, a tour with specific route details, or visits arranged individually. These different interests do not all have to be packed into a busy itinerary.
Circular Trails and Nature
The Village Discovery Trail is a circular route through and around Oberhausen an der Nahe. Along the way, it passes public squares, facilities, sights and places to stop for refreshments. Signage and trail conditions may change, so check the current route before setting out.
The Prinzregent-Luitpold Loop offers specific information for planning your time: it is 5.8 kilometres long, takes around 1 hour 40 minutes and includes 121 metres of both ascent and descent. There is a car park for this loop near Gundert; availability may change. Well-maintained trails also lead from Oberhausen to the Lemberg and Gangelsberg protected areas. These trails to the protected areas therefore differ from the Village Discovery Trail, which runs through and around the village.
The rare dice snake can also be spotted in the area around Oberhausen. Sightings are seasonal and not guaranteed, so do not plan one as a fixed part of your itinerary.
Wine and Getting There
Seven wineries in Oberhausen an der Nahe welcome visitors. Arrange your visit individually; the number of wineries may change over time. If you want to make wine the focus of your stay, plan each visit separately rather than assuming you can visit spontaneously.
Oberhausen an der Nahe can be reached by bus. Check current timetables before travelling. There is an e-bike charging station for cyclists; check its availability before you set off. These tips address different aspects of planning: travelling by bus and a possible charging option along the way.
Bridge, Museum and Visitor Mine
The historic sandstone Luitpold Bridge was built in 1889 so that winegrowers could transport grapes and wine to trading companies in Bad Kreuznach. The bridge once marked the border between the Bavarian Palatinate and Prussia. Its history links wine transport with a former boundary.
The Tractor Museum displays numerous exhibits for fans of historic tractors. The Schmittenstollen Visitor Mine is also an excursion attraction associated with Oberhausen an der Nahe. Visitor arrangements for both destinations may change; check current options before visiting.
More Highlights in the Wider Destination of Bad Kreuznach
The wider destination of Bad Kreuznach offers its own attractions beyond Oberhausen’s village and wine experiences. In the city of Bad Kreuznach, the Bridge Houses were built from 1480 onwards because of a lack of space. The half-timbered buildings stand on the pillars of the old Nahe Bridge, which was built around 1300. This architectural history offers a distinct contrast to Oberhausen’s Luitpold Bridge, which is associated with wine transport and a former border.
Since 1985/86, the museums of the city of Bad Kreuznach have been housed in the listed former Bangert manor, set in a historic park. In Bretzenheim, the Felsenhermitage is a place of worship carved entirely out of the rock. It probably dates back to prehistoric times and was repurposed in the early Christian period. It can be viewed from the outside year-round and without a guide; access to the rock dwelling is currently not possible because of a rockfall.
In Windesheim, the orgel ART Museum is a musical instrument museum unique of its kind in Germany. In Bad Sobernheim, the 3.5-kilometre-long barefoot trail leads to the Nahe. It includes a clay-treading pool, an obstacle course and various ground surfaces, and is a summer leisure activity.
