Merxheim can be explored from different angles: the Old Town Hall dates back to the 15th century, viewpoints offer vistas of the village and valley, and Winchendeller Pond has several leisure facilities. When looking for a holiday apartment for a stay in Merxheim, it helps to decide first whether local history, hiking or time outdoors is the main priority.

Local history and route connections

Merxheim’s Old Town Hall dates back to the 15th century. The village is also on the German Avenue Road and connected with the wine-growing towns along the Nahe Wine Route. The Nahe Wine Route is considered a 130-kilometre route that follows historic connections used by the Romans for viticulture and wine trading. This extends the view from a historic building in the village to the longer stories associated with the wine route.

An architectural perspective on Bad Kreuznach

In the wider destination of Bad Kreuznach, the Bridge Houses are a historic landmark in their own right. They were built from 1480 onwards due to a lack of space. These half-timbered buildings stand on pillars of the old Nahe Bridge, which was built around 1300. Unlike Merxheim’s town hall, the focus here is on the connection between the houses and the older bridge; the buildings illustrate different architectural contexts.

Hiking trails and viewpoints

Two signposted hiking trails cross Merxheim’s municipal area and lead to the Meckenbacher Höhe gliding airfield. Signposting and trail conditions may change; check both before setting out. The Panorama Trail passes Kirschroth. A circular hike around Meckenbach passes a junction marked Merxheim. The circular route itself goes around Meckenbach, is considered moderately difficult and requires good fitness.

The viewpoints also differ in what they look out over. At Raumberg, a viewing platform offers panoramic views across the Nahe Valley and Merxheim. At the Heimberg viewpoint, you can look out over vineyards, the valley and the Soonwald heights, and there is a table-and-bench set where you can take a break.

Winchendeller Pond and local breaks

The Winchendeller Pond Trail leads through open oak woodland. The Winchendeller Pond recreation area has barbecue facilities, a children’s playground and a footbath pool. A meadow is available for playing, while covered rest areas offer picnic spots. Sanitary facilities are available, and parking is possible at the recreation area. Facilities and parking arrangements may change; check the latest information before your visit. If you plan to use the barbecue facilities, confirm their availability on site in advance.

In the village centre, Burggraben has a fountain and seating where you can take a rest. For a meal or drink, Merxheim’s local dining options include a restaurant, a wine tavern, a café and another inn. Businesses and services may change, so check current availability when making specific plans.

Travelling by bus

A bus runs from Bad Sobernheim railway station to the centre of Merxheim. As services and timetables may change, it is advisable to check the connection before travelling.
