Kirschroth combines a history of viticulture with a practical way to experience the landscape on foot: the Fox Trail is a circular route through fields, forests and vineyards. The town lies 260 metres above sea level and is one of the highest viticultural communities in Rhineland-Palatinate. Kirschroth has around 80 hectares of vineyards and 284 hectares of forest. Forests, open fields and vineyards offer a range of landscapes to enjoy during a stay.

On foot through fields, forests and vineyards

The Fox Trail is a circular hiking route around Kirschroth. It starts at the community hall in the town centre, where parking is available. Check the parking situation before travelling and the route information before setting out. The trail climbs to 450 metres. On a clear day, the view extends across the Nahe Valley and the North Palatine Uplands to the Hunsrück. Numerous rest areas along the route offer places to take a break during the walk. This makes it possible to plan the climb, views and rest stops together, without assuming that the Hunsrück will be visible regardless of conditions.

Viticulture as part of the town

Viticulture has been part of life in Kirschroth for generations. The local vineyards grow Riesling, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, Dornfelder, Pinot Noir, Rivaner, Bacchus and Regent. The soils, climate and winemakers’ craft shape the character of the wines. The landscape crossed by the Fox Trail is thus connected with a tangible insight into local grape growing. After a hike, a visit to a winery or local host can be a nice addition; whether this is possible depends on current opening hours. Check them in advance.

Where to stay and how to plan your visit

For travellers with a motorhome or trailer, the local campsite is a specific overnight option. It is set among vineyards, fields and forests and has space for up to four large motorhomes or trailers. There is a playground and a large football field right next to the site. Electricity is available for a fee; fresh water is available at the nearby community hall. The site is also a starting point for the Fox Trail, walks through the vineyards and cycling routes along the Nahe. Before travelling, check the latest information about the site, its facilities and fees.

Local history and architecture

Kirschroth was first mentioned in 1364 under the name “Rodde.” The church was built in 1850 as a late-classical hall church in red sandstone. A late Gothic sacrament niche from an earlier chapel has been preserved in the tower. The town’s history thus brings together buildings from different periods. Agriculture also shaped Kirschroth: until well into the 20th century, it was predominant alongside viticulture.

Culture in the wider destination of Bad Kreuznach

Another architectural highlight in the wider destination of Bad Kreuznach is the Bridge Houses. These half-timbered buildings were constructed from 1480 onwards on pillars of the old Nahe Bridge, which was built around 1300, to address a lack of space. The houses and bridge thus belong to clearly distinct building phases and offer a regional cultural point of interest separate from Kirschroth’s local history.
