The Cuckoo Trail gives a stay in Hergenfeld a clear focus: exploring nature on foot, with vineyards, small valleys and wooded stretches. A shady spot by the stream in the Limbach Valley offers a place to rest; shy animals can occasionally be spotted.

Scenery along the Cuckoo Trail

The trail connects woodland and forest edges with gently rolling meadows, fields, small valleys and vineyards. Views include the Nahe hills, Bad Kreuznach and Rheinhessen, as well as the Donnersberg and the HunsrĂĽck or Soonwald. Open spaces and wooded stretches alternate along the route. The views and trail conditions may vary depending on the season.

The Cuckoo Trail passes through Hergenfeld’s vineyards and the Limbach Valley, leading to a shady spot by the stream that is ideal for a break. This offers a different landscape from the open fields and viewpoints. Shy animals can sometimes be spotted, but sightings cannot be planned. If you combine a hike with wildlife watching, treat the possibility as an occasional stroke of luck.

Getting there and finding your way

The route via the A 61 and Windesheim is indicated for getting there; parking is available at the sports field. Trail information may change on site, so check the signs and current route before setting off.

More things to discover in the wider Bad Kreuznach destination

The wider Bad Kreuznach destination offers more landscapes and cultural attractions. The bridge houses in Bad Kreuznach were built from 1480 onwards due to a lack of space. These half-timbered buildings stand on the pillars of the old Nahe Bridge, which was built around 1300. The buildings and the bridge therefore date from different periods.

The rock hermitage in Bretzenheim offers a different experience: this place of worship is carved entirely into the rock. It probably dates back to prehistoric times and was repurposed in the early Christian period. It can be viewed from outside all year round, without a guided tour. Access to the rock dwelling is currently not possible due to a rockfall.

For a different kind of walk, try the barefoot trail in Bad Sobernheim. This 3.5-kilometre footpath leads to the Nahe and includes a clay-treading pool, an obstacle course and a variety of surfaces. This summer leisure activity is seasonal.

Since 1985/86, the museums of Bad Kreuznach have been housed in the listed former Bangert manor, set in a historic park. In Windesheim, the organ ART Museum is a musical instrument museum that is unique of its kind in Germany. For information about stays, accommodation and booking, leisure activities, wellness, wine and food, contact the tourist information offices of the municipal associations and towns in the district, or Naheland Touristik in Kirn.
