Frei-Laubersheim’s town hall is a Renaissance building dating from 1603; a pillory stone stands by the building. Another witness to the past is the defensive tower of the former fortifications: it was built around 1200 and is considered the oldest building in the village. Together, the town hall and defensive tower reflect different historical periods.

Building history and places of remembrance

The first construction phases of several buildings in the historic quarter date back to the 16th century; they were rebuilt in the 18th century. The more recent church building also has a precise date: it was consecrated on 8 November 1970 and designed as a seven-sided rotunda with an integrated bell tower. The Peace Linden beside the Catholic church commemorates the Franco-Prussian War of 1870–1871. The foundations of the former St Catherine’s Church were also excavated north of Frei-Laubersheim by a local teacher and a school class.

Village museum: small rooms, changing occasions to visit

The village museum is located in the former sales room of the Mathes butcher’s shop. This room was added in 1905 to a main building dating from 1734. The exhibition room measures 25 square metres; the outdoor area is twice as large. Two shop windows are also used to display exhibits. The layout and presentation may change.

Visiting times are available in connection with public events in Frei-Laubersheim and regional, national or international occasions such as International Museum Day. Check in advance whether the museum will be open on your preferred date. For this visit, the event date is an important planning consideration; for a hike, the route length and elevation gain set the parameters instead.

Hiwweltour Eichelberg and wine tradition

The Hiwweltour Eichelberg begins and ends at the hiking car park by the old railway station in Frei-Laubersheim. The circular route is 11.2 kilometres long, with 270 metres of elevation gain and 270 metres of descent. Its themes bring together varied natural and cultural landscapes, insights into the Quarzitporphyr quarries and Frei-Laubersheim’s wine culture. The distance and elevation gain give you a concrete basis for planning your day without specifying a walking time. Check the local trail infrastructure and the current route information before setting out.

The village’s wine-growing tradition goes back more than 1,200 years. The local nickname “Cappes-Laubersheim” also tells a story of the past: it refers to the historical importance of cabbage growing. Alongside its buildings, winegrowing and agriculture are distinct themes in the village’s history.

Bad Kreuznach as a distinct cultural highlight

The wider destination of Bad Kreuznach offers its own city attractions. The bridge houses in Bad Kreuznach were built from 1480 onwards because of a lack of space. The half-timbered buildings stand on pillars of the old Nahe bridge, which was built around 1300. The museums of the city of Bad Kreuznach are housed in the listed former Bangert manor in a historic park, where they have been located since 1985/86.
