Bad Sobernheim combines historic everyday culture with trails for active pursuits: the open-air museum explores how people lived and worked in different periods, while the Felke Healing and Activity Forest offers nature and forest bathing. There is also the barefoot path along the Nahe and a compact town center. From the marketplace, central locations are less than five minutes away. For independent exploration, a historic town walk is available to download; private and themed tours can be booked by arrangement. Check booking availability before your trip.

Everyday history at the open-air museum

The Rhineland-Palatinate Open-Air Museum is located in Nachtigallental. Its exhibits include authentically furnished living and working spaces, as well as workshops and historic shops from different periods. The grounds also include fields, gardens, a vineyard and orchards with old crop and ornamental plants. Buildings, work and cultivation thus offer different ways to explore history.

A digital Actionbound scavenger hunt, “The Missing Diary,” leads visitors around the museum grounds and tells the story of a boy’s life in the 19th century. Hands-on stations and interactive exhibition areas are spread throughout the museum. Those who prefer to explore the connections between people and nature can also do so on the WaldKulturWeg: interactive stations show how the two have shaped each other over the centuries.

Trails and nature experiences

The Felke Healing and Activity Forest is located in the town forest and Am Maasberg recreation area. The concept aims to incorporate Felke’s elements—water, light, air and clay baths—into the idea of forest bathing. The 4.5-kilometer Healing Trail features information boards about Felke’s elements and prompts for forest bathing. Another Activity Forest route is more than 5.2 kilometers long, with stations for climbing, balancing, crawling and jumping.

The barefoot path is a 3.5-kilometer nature loop along the Nahe. Sand, stones, grass, bark mulch and clay alternate along the route, which also includes a suspension bridge and a river crossing assisted by a rope. The routes differ in more than just length: the barefoot path focuses on surfaces and crossings, the Healing Trail combines information with forest-bathing prompts, and the Activity Forest route offers exercise stations.

The Maasberg recreation area also offers its own setting, with old trees and the Hubertuslust barbecue area, intended for relaxation and active fitness. Those looking for other activities can also enjoy hiking and cycling, golf, disc golf and mini golf, a leisure pool, flights from Domberg and a sauna facility in Bad Sobernheim.

Felke connections and exploring the town

The Felke theme has historic roots in Bad Sobernheim: Pastor Felke and Andres Dhonau founded the first Jungborn here in 1915, with clay and air baths. This makes it possible to consider today’s connection between Felke and the forest concept alongside that history, without treating the two as the same thing.

A historic town walk is available to download for exploring the town independently. Those who prefer a guided tour of Bad Sobernheim can book private or themed tours by arrangement; it is best to check booking availability before your trip. Central locations are a short walk from the marketplace, which can make it easier to find your way around the town center.

Cultural events and regional tastings

The Mattheiser Sommer-Akademie is a classical music festival in Bad Sobernheim that has brought a cultural program to the rural region since 1988. Specific program dates vary; if you’re planning your trip around a visit, check the dates in advance.

Excursion restaurants, farms and wineries can be found along the route near the district of Steinhardt. At tasting rooms, winemakers invite visitors to sample their products. As individual businesses and availability may change, it is advisable to arrange visits and tastings before your trip.
