Neu-Bamberg combines historic sites in the village with hikes through a varied landscape. A historic walking trail and the restored castle ruins provide a cultural focus; two Hiwweltour trails offer a specific choice based on distance, starting point and trail profile. When planning your trip, it is therefore worth first deciding whether the walking tour or a day of hiking should be the main focus.
Historic traces in Neu-Bamberg
The historic walking trail links buildings and places that are important to Neu-Bamberg’s history; an audio version accompanies the route. The restored ruins of Neu-Baumburg Castle crown Neu-Bamberg. Construction of the fortress began in the first third of the 13th century, while parts of the old fortress were restored and rebuilt in 1980. A vineyard name is also documented from an early date: the Neu-Bamberg vineyard site “am Eichelberg” is recorded in 1521. The walking tour, castle and historic vineyard designation offer three different starting points for a cultural stay.
Comparing two circular routes
The Hiwweltour Heideblick is a 10 km circular hike that begins and ends at Hesselborner Mühle in Neu-Bamberg. The Hiwweltour Eichelberg is 11.08 km long; its start and finish are at the old railway station between Frei-Laubersheim and Neu-Bamberg. Heideblick is therefore the shorter loop, while Eichelberg has a different starting point and covers a little more distance. Eichelberg is rated “moderate”; the ascent and descent of the Eichelberg include steeper sections. You can compare both distance and terrain profile when choosing between the routes.
Heideblick: vineyards and nature reserve
The Hiwweltour Heideblick links cultivated vineyards, protected natural areas, heathland and panoramic views around Siefersheim and Neu-Bamberg. It follows an old railway line through the Appelbachtal to KatzensteigermĂĽhle. The viewpoint at the Adlerdenkmal offers a view across the Neu-Bamberger Heide nature reserve. The trail thus combines different landscape features with a clearly marked viewpoint and a section along the old railway line.
Eichelberg: railway line, quarry and views
The Hiwweltour Eichelberg follows the old railway line past an active quartz porphyry quarry; operating conditions may change. The route offers views towards the Neu-Bamberger Heide, Ajaxturm and the castle ruins in Neu-Bamberg. Together with the steeper sections on the ascent and descent, these features give the route a different profile from the shorter Heideblick.
Getting there and guided hikes
Access points for the Hiwweltour Heideblick are at Burggraben, Uhrturm and Hesselborner MĂĽhle. Bus 224 connects Bad Kreuznach railway station with the Neu-Bamberg stop. Check the current timetable before travelling, and check the latest trail and access information before setting out. Guided hikes are offered on both Hiwweltour trails. As availability and booking arrangements may change, check the current options in advance.
Planning your stay
If you are looking for a holiday apartment for a stay in Neu-Bamberg, your planned activities can help you decide: would you like to focus on the historic walking trail and the castle ruins, or on one of the two Hiwweltour trails? The hikes offer different distances and starting points; for Eichelberg, the terrain profile described above is another factor.
